Year One

Communicating with the Year One Team

We look forward to partnering with you in 2025, and welcome your input:

When communicating with the Year One team, please reach out via the below email addresses.  Your child's class teacher is your first point of contact when requiring a discussion. You will usually see us outside the classrooms at the end of the day. This is the preferred time to catch us for a quick chat as we are focused on greeting the students before school.

Please also note that we have scheduled meetings at 3.45pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

We look forward to partnering with you in 2025, and welcome your input:

Mathematics in Year One.

Throughout Term One, our Year One students have been exploring language associated with numbers, how objects can make a collection, and different ways we can represent numbers.

Students have been exposed to creating collections using various materials and identifying ways that the collection can be divided into subsets.

They then built on these skills by learning about numbers and a representing the same number in a variety of ways. This included representing numbers up to 120 in standard form (numerals), in worded form, or on a number line. Hands on materials such as MAB was used to introduce the base ten system, which allowed our learners to explore how two digit numbers can be rearranged (partitioned) into equal parts.

Being exposed to the base ten system, gave students the opportunity to expand two- and three-digit numbers into their value. Learning was displayed by the completion of our ‘Caterpillar Number Crawls’ and other hands on learning opportunities.

Our unit on place value has been a strong and valuable introduction to Mathematics for the year. The place value and base ten system is a valuable feature that shapes the foundation for all topics covered in Maths this year.

Year One Swimming!

From Monday 17th March – Friday 21st March, our Year One students participated in their annual swimming program at Know Leisureworks. Students focused on developing their overall awareness of water safety and learnt other relevant swimming skills. Another important part of participation in this program ahs been watching our learners develop skills in their independence. This has included life skills such as clipping in seatbelts on the bus, remembering extra equipment for school, dressing and undressing while at the pool, and listening carefully to instructions to remain safe while moving between the school grounds and in a different learning environment. We celebrated the end of a successful week with Friday Fun Day that saw a lesson filled with fun activities, including a ride on the waterslide!

Thank you to our parent helpers – Monique, Daniel, Kerryn and Bec for coming with us on the bus, assisting with toileting during lessons and supervising shoes, socks and laces at the end of each session.

Take Home Readers

All Year One students have been given their 'Home Reading Diary' for Term One. Each week, your child will be provided with one hard copy reader to read for the week. We ask that the book is read 3-4 times per week and is logged into your child’s reading diary.

Your child’s reading diary and book needs to be brought back to school every Monday morning to be checked and swapped over by your child’s classroom teacher. We kindly ask that all books are taken care of and returned in good condition every Monday.

Please don't forget to practise 'tricky words'. These words have irregular spelling patterns and are often difficult for children to sound out, therefore need to be learnt through regular practise and repetition.
