KINDERGARTEN KOALAS NEWS

Time has flown by, and here we are in Week 10!  Our Kindy Koalas have had a busy term full of exciting adventures and learning.  It’s been amazing to watch the students grow in confidence and thrive over the past 40 days of Kindy.  They should be incredibly proud of all they've accomplished!  Below is a little glimpse of just some of the learning outcomes we’ve explored in recent weeks.

Numeracy

This term, our Koalas have been working hard, exploring new and exciting mathematical concepts.  We have been practising forming our numbers 1-10, as well as recognising how smaller numbers come together to make bigger ones!  We also explored measurement by getting outside into nature and investigating the length, area, and capacity of things in our playground.

Literacy

In literacy, our reading and writing have soared!  Through our reading rotations, we’ve been introduced to new sounds and sound blends, helping us make huge strides in our literacy skills. Check out some of our writing work in the photos below!

Science and Technology

This term, our Kindy Koala scientists have been diving into the world of coding with our school robots!  We’ve explored basic coding instructions such as forwards, backwards, left, right, go, and stop, using these commands to navigate the robots.  We’ve also discussed how things move by experimenting with the movement of our bodies, observing objects that move, and even watching tea bags move in fascinating ways when set alight!  Our curious Koalas have been busy with so many scientific investigations, combining coding and hands-on experiments along the way!

Visual Arts

It’s been a big term for visual arts!  We’ve been creating community-themed class artworks, painting beautiful watercolours, and drawing self-portraits with oil pastels, pencils, and textas.  It’s been wonderful to see students express themselves creatively through colour, shape, and line.  One of our favourite lessons was at the yarning circle, where we did observational nature drawings.  The students truly embraced their artistic skills!

Dance and Learning Support

Dance! Dance! Dance!

This semester, Martin’s Gully students have been dancing up a storm in our weekly Dance lessons!  Last week the Possums and the Magpies used the elements of dance to create scarecrow characters.  We then learned the moves to Dingle Dangle Scarecrow.  Students did a great job coming up with some fabulous dance moves of their own to add to the dance.  Check out the amazing shapes and levels used to create these unique scarecrows!

In upper-primary, we have been viewing some amazing dances by the Bangarra Dance Theatre - a company of professional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers. Students have been learning to analyse and reflect on the dances they have viewed, incorporating their knowledge of the elements of dance.

Stage 2 have been working on dynamics in dance and last lesson practised creating strong ‘POW!’ movements using different levels

Stage 3 have been busy learning and practising their dances for An Evening With ACOS which will be performed in Term 3. I am so proud of their persistence and am always impressed by their creativity and groovy dance moves!

Magpie Maths with Miss Randall

I have been very lucky this term to work with an amazing group of Magpie Mathematicians! These students have been learning to read, write, count and make numbers to 10 and beyond. On Monday, we made Rekenreks to help us with our learning. Check them out below!

Wishing you all a safe and happy end of the term.

Warmest Regards,

Sarah Randall
