ACU Principal Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing 2024 Survey Results

The recently released ACU Principal survey results highlight some positive developments for school leaders in Victoria, however, there continues to be areas of ongoing concern that require attention. Encouragingly, the data shows improvements in workplace support systems, with increased access to professional development and enhanced peer collaboration helping to mitigate stress levels. Additionally, reported incidents of offensive behaviour have slightly declined, suggesting progress in fostering safer school environments through initiatives such as the School Community Safety Order Scheme.

Despite these developments, the survey continues to emphasise enduring and significant concerns. Workload remains a significant issue, with many principals continuing to report excessive administrative demands that impact their capacity to focus on educational leadership. Wellbeing indicators, including stress and emotional exhaustion, remain elevated, reinforcing the need for sustained systemic support. The findings emphasise the importance of targeted strategies to improve work-life balance and mental health resources for school leaders.

The survey results serve as a crucial benchmark for ongoing efforts to enhance principal wellbeing and create healthier, more sustainable leadership conditions in schools across Victoria and indeed our nation.
