Purple Snow

By Eric Lobbecke

Can Cockatoo prove that there's purple snow in his home town?

Cockatoo has travelled all the way from Australia to Polar Bear’s home to see the white snow. But it's not what he expects. When he invites his friends to see the purple snow that falls in Australia in summer each year, they laugh and laugh. Only Polar Bear is willing to make the trip. But at the end of an exhausting journey he is too tired to look for the purple snow. He falls asleep - and wakes up to a big surprise!

Can you see the purple snow (Jacaranda trees) where you live?

Gateways Challenge

On Thursday, 2nd November, four Year Three students and four Year Four students went to Swinburne University for an extension program named the G.A.T.E.WAYS Challenge.

In the Year Three team, The Auburn South Academics, there were four children – Nicholas, the mathematics team leader, Lachlan, the geography team leader, Matthew, the science team leader, and Estella, the creative writing team leader.

There were four difficult challenges. A Science challenge called Master Gardener, a mathematics challenge called Diner Derby, a geography challenge called Helter Skelter, and a Creative Writing challenge called The School with No Name. Each challenge had its own obstacles.

Master Gardener was where a client is asking for you to design their garden for them. Everyone is planting away… then the client sends an email saying that they bought a new puppy, and of course, everyone is resetting their garden design.

Then there was Diner Derby. This one was the most difficult of all of the challenges. The deal was that you had to figure out the distance between each table in the diner, and then we had to figure out which person ordered what meal using the clues provided.

Helter Skelter is all about geocaching. The aim of it was to solve a tangram puzzle. In order to do that, you had to find caches around the map. On top of that, you needed to answer some pit stop questions and most of the answers were on the map.

Last but not least, The School with No Name was the simplest of all.  You had to create a school for time-travelers. To do that, you had to come up with an appropriate school name, an emblem, a logo, and a motto. You also had to develop four teachers’ profiles and come up with a subject they teach. You also had to write a short narrative about someone’s first lesson.

The children loved the experience, and they hope to go a second time.

Volunteering at ASPS

After reviewing our current processes, we have developed a Parent/Volunteer Helper Handbook.

Going forward, all volunteers at ASPS (sporting events, classroom reading, excursions, SAKG, canteen etc.) will be required to read this handbook and return the two signed forms, along with their WWC, to the office.

Once this has occurred, then you can volunteer at ASPS.

Please find the Parent/Volunteer Helper Handbook below:
