Year 10 and 11 Students Connect with Industry for Insightful Career Guidance

Mirboo North Secondary College students recently attended a Speed Careers Conversation session, which gave them the opportunity to engage with industry representatives from a range of fields. Students had the chance to interact with mentors from health, education and training, new energy, finance, emergency services, community, small business, graphic design, water treatment, real estate, and local government. During the session, students were able to ask questions, seek advice, and gain valuable insights from professionals who generously shared their experiences and expertise. The sessions were organised in partnership with South Gippsland Bass Coast LLEN and CUC Bass Coast.

Grant for Centsible Program

We were very pleased to be awarded one of the 2023 Mirboo North and District Community Foundation community grants.  Our school received $2000 which will be used to support the delivery of the Centsible program to our Year 11 students in 2024. Centsible is a program which teaches students the fundamental financial literacy that today's curriculum forgot. Thank you MNDCF for your support and generosity.

Year 7 Food Technology

Wednesday the 6th December was the last year 7 cooking class for 2023 and they got to make gingerbread biscuits. They started by creaming the sugar and butter. Then they  added the egg yolk and golden syrup. After that was all added the last thing to add was the flour and spices. Once all ingredients were mixed the dough was rolled out and they started to cut shapes out. There were so many shapes to choose from. They were in the oven for 10 mins and after letting them cool on a rack for another 10 minutes, the children got to add icing and sprinkles.

All of the year 7's loved this recipe and all I heard for the day was how good the gingerbread biscuits were.

7A Sausage Rolls 15/11/2023

In cooking today, the children made sausage rolls however they were asked to try 2 types of pastry. The kids could see the difference between the puff pastry and the shortcut pastry. After they were all cooked and enjoyed the verdict was, they preferred the puff pastry as it was flakier, crumbly and airy.

Cooper – I got to cut up the parsley and onion. Liam was my partner. We used 2 types of pastry which were puff and shortcut. They were really hot but yummy.

Thomas – We made sausage rolls. We had to cut up and grate some vegetable and mix in with some meat. We placed in some pastry and rolled them up.

Lily – Today in cooking we made sausage rolls, we put onion, carrot, parsley, potato and some meat in puff and short cut pastry. I liked how much vegies there were and the balance of the meat. Oh I also liked the pastry as well.

7B Choc Chip Cookies 22/11/2023

In cooking today, the children made cookies. The kids really loved this making around 24 cookies each. They got to use three types of chocolate, white, milk and dark. Here is what some of the kids had to say.

Harry – we made choc chip cookies, and they were good.

Matilda R – We made cookies they tasted good.

Miley – in cooking today I was partnered with Lucy. We made chocolate chip cookies, and we used different chocolates. They tasted really good!

7C Vegemite and cheese scrolls 29/11/2023

In cooking today, the children made vegemite and cheese scrolls.

Libby – I ended up using tomato paste and cheese. They were okay, but I don’t think I would make them again.

Zoe – I prefer to make them with puff pastry. Otherwise, I did however like making them.

David – I liked them they tasted good. Eating them was the best part.

Patty – delicious, spectacular, incredible and scrumptious.

Linc – I thought they were good however would’ve liked more vegemite.

Beth – I used tomato paste and cheese as well I thought they were amazing and fabulous. It was one of my favourite foods.

Cooper – I thought they were okay. I just would’ve liked less vegemite.

Year 8 Woodwork – Deck Chairs

In woodwork this semester the year 8 students got to make a deck chair. Having to use lots of different tools and techniques these chairs were very successful. These chairs look amazing with everyone having their own twist and design ironed onto the material.  Here is what some of the students had to say about them.

8D

Riley Put – In woodwork this semester I made a deck chair. It was good. I wouldn’t want to change anything except maybe the P as I did it backwards by mistake.

Montana – I really like woodwork and I am going to be doing it next year. It has been a great learning experience.

Isla – It was a really fun subject, although it was a little loud!

8C

Charlotte P – woodwork this year was very exciting with chair making. It was quite fun. Once we finished the chair, we made our design and ironed it on. The whole sewing bit was a bit different most people struggled with the machines because they didn’t work majority of the time. The whole experience was pretty good, and I would do it all again.

Gaby – my experience this year in woodwork was really exciting. We made so many cool things as in a chair and they all looked great. I hope next year will be this great.

Myles – In year 8 woodwork we have been making deck chairs. What I like about it is cutting the wood, measuring, and doing all the practical things. Once we finished the chairs it felt really rewarding to be able to sit in it and take it home. What we didn’t like was the theory part, like researching the wood, fabric and that sort of stuff even though it is very important.

We also didn’t like the sewing very much, as sewing wasn’t really in any of our skill sets plus the sewing machines broke a million times, so the teachers ended up doing a lot of our sewing. Whilst the others opted to instead use their own sewing machines at home.

YEAR 10 WOODWORK - CLOCKS

Year 10’s made clocks using a variety of different woods. We used epoxy resin & colours for the first time, which was not only a learning curve for the students but also for the staff. Some very creative combinations and designs were completed.
