Gospel and Reflection

Matthew 25:14-15, 19-21

Jesus spoke this parable to his disciples: 'The kingdom of heaven is like a man on his way abroad who summoned his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to a third one; each in proportion to his ability. Then he set out. Now a long time after, the master of those servants came back and went through his accounts with them. The man who had received the five talents came forward bringing five more. "Sir," he said, "you entrusted me with five talents; here are five more that I have made." His master said to him, "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have shown you can be faithful in small things, I will trust you with greater; come and join in your master's happiness."'

The parable from Sunday’s Gospel captures a sense of what it means to grow in maturity and and embrace responsibility. Mission is at the heart of our college—it’s an important way for our students to commit to being “faithful in small things”. Through their wholehearted way of participating in Mission activities, they demonstrate they can be trusted with greater things.

Our work in Mission aims to serve and build community, animating the two main commandments to love God and neighbour. As a Catholic school in the Marist tradition, our college is inspired by scripture and the Church’s social teachings to uphold the dignity of each and every person, and to strive for the common good.

With that in mind, thank you to all of the generous students and staff who have contributed their time, goods, donations and energy to the MATES programs this year;

  • Game Changers Years 7 and 8 (La Valla)
  • Years 9 and 10 (Le Rosey)
  • Years 11 and 12 (Hermitage)
  • Stationery Aid (every Friday morning from 7:15am – 8:30am in Room 801)
  • St Vincent de Paul Executive and members (meetings every Thursday Break 2 and fundraisers)
  • Boarders Blitz (Every Wednesday from 4:00pm – 6:00pm)
  • Rosies Friends on the Street visits on Monday and Wednesday nights from 5:00pm – 11:00pm

  • Tread Lightly (those who donated their old sneakers for recycling)

The Mission office is excited that this and more continue with even the same commitment and creativity in 2024.

Immersion Program in 2024

The Immersion program will be up and running again for next year’s Year 11s following this year’s immersion encounter for our group of Year 11 students into Santa Teresa community.

Thanks and Farewell!

The Mission team would like to thank Bec Wong for her invaluable work as a Youth Minister this year. Bec’s passion, energy and dedication has made a big difference to students getting involved in Mission through the MATEs program. With Bec moving on from Marist, we take this opportunity to say thank you, farewell and God bless.

“This work we call Mission is real, it makes a difference and I would like to think that the work that we do at Marist College Ashgrove with our hands and our hearts forms great habits for our students and staff. A habit of helping the sick, the poor and the marginalized, so that before we know it, we have made Christ visible through our thoughts, words, actions and steadfast agape for the us in ‘others’. Being ‘normal’ is being ‘unselfish’, helping others is a great habit for our students and staff to nurture and develop.” (Bec Wong)
