Verity Sheppard -  Teaching and Learning Excellence

On Monday’s Curriculum Day, our dedicated teachers engaged in an exciting professional learning day. We focused on enriching our understanding of the 6+1 Traits of Writing and were guided by Literacy Consultant Narissa Leung (Oz Lit Teacher).

We engaged in workshops and discussions, exploring innovative strategies and resources to develop essential writing skills in our students. We also gained insights into how we can continue to cultivate a vibrant writing culture within our school community. Teachers are excited and are looking forward to implementing their learning and continuing to foster a love of literacy with students.

The 6+1 Traits of Writing are Ideas, Organisation, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions, and Presentation -- the ingredients for great writing. The approach is to think of writing like cooking a delicious dish. The 6+1 Traits of Writing are a lot like a chef's special ingredients for a recipe. Ideas are the main ingredients, giving your writing its substance. Organization is how you put everything together, like following steps in a recipe. Word Choice is just like picking the right spices to add flavour and excitement. Sentence Fluency is how your writing flows smoothly, like mixing ingredients evenly. Your Voice is what makes your writing unique, like a chef's personal touch. Conventions are the rules you follow, making sure everything is correct, just like measuring ingredients precisely. Finally, Presentation is like how a chef plates their dish: it's how you present your writing to others! Combining these traits is how you create a great piece of writing, just like a chef creates a tasty meal.
