Wellbeing

with Lisa Osborne

Well I have now been at BPS for 7 weeks and in that time I have been blown away by the creativity and gifts I see all around me within both the children, staff and volunteers! In the interest of transparency I should disclose that creativity is not always my biggest strength, therefore, I really appreciate it in others.

Since starting I have had the privilege of visiting each of the classrooms and introducing myself to all of the kids and teachers and have spent time with a number of kids one on one. I was also able to attend two very special events the Grade 5 and 6 Market Stalls and The Evening of Music. Creativity in crafts, baking, singing, playing instruments, advertising and sales techniques were all on show, just to mention a few! I have witnessed staff creativity in supporting students as they learn, create environments that are engaging and manage the busyness of the classroom. Then there are the volunteers, breakfast club, hobby club, Kids Hope Mentors all using their gifts and creativity to engage, encourage and support kids in fun meaningful ways.

Creativity is a crucial part of a child's development, it fosters mental growth in children by providing opportunities for trying out new ideas, and new ways of thinking and problem-solving. This can help develop self-confidence, communication skills and a sense of identity while helping children to cope with their feelings. Creativity can help develop a child's fine motor skills and concentration and focus and it is definitely a lot of fun:)

As a parent I know sometimes busyness can get in the way of exploring creativity with our children let alone for ourselves. All of us can benefit from exploring our creative side in whatever field that may be and having fun. With this in mind I have challenged myself to think of some creative Christmas crafts to do during my sessions with kids over the remaining weeks of this term. Feel free to keep me accountable and even give some ideas! Let me encourage you to find some time with your kids and get creative!
