Level 1 & 2 Wonga Weekly
Week 9, Term 3
In Week 9 we are learning about...
📚 ENGLISH
In Reading, we will be examining the text, 'The Piggy Book' by Anthony Browne. This text provides us with great examples of how to respect others. Students will consider how the characters actions impact others in the story. Students will also focus on how the vocabulary used sets the tone of the text.
In Writing, we will continue to build our knowledge of conventions, particularly noticing the punctuation that is used when writing sentences. We are working hard to remember that sentences must start with a capital letter and finish with boundary punctuation. We are also stretching as writers to include commas, apostrophes and speech marks in our responses.
In Phonics, we will continue our focus on saying and hearing sounds in words to assist us with spelling. In Grade 1, students will learn about closed and open syllables, the digraph 'ch' and the trigraph 'tch'. In Grade 2, students will continue to learn about the vowel teams the make the long vowel sounds.
What you can do at home
You might like to practise some of the phonics we are working on in the classroom this week. You can find optional tasks to do at home at the end of this week's edition of the Wonga Weekly. These tasks will support our classroom focusses for the week.
🎲 NUMERACY
We will continue our focus on fractions. Students will practice finding half of a whole shape and half of a collection of items. They will think about solving worded problems linked to fractions.
This week we will also continue measuring. Our tasks will be related to the concepts weight, mass and capacity. We will link this learning to our fraction focus too, where possible.
What you can do at home:
Find out when fractions are used in our daily lives. What are you doing when you refer to 'half' and 'quarter'? As a start, check in cook books, on measurement tools and when following directions. Make a list of all the ways you find.
🌄 CBL - Respect
This week students will continue to build a response to our challenge, 'teach others about the importance of respecting yourself and others'. Students will begin building our 'Respect' mural together. They will write scripts to use in our video response to the challenge.
This term, our CBL work links directly to the 'Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships' program and we are completing many of the related topics during the term.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
We would like to remind you that our school adheres to the SunSmart policy set by the Victorian Government. All students are required to wear a broad-brimmed hat when outdoors from the 1st September, when UV levels are typically higher. Please ensure your child brings a hat to school every day to protect them from the sun's harmful rays. Thank you for your support in keeping our school community safe and sun-smart.
