TERM 3, Week 7

This year in Prep, during our wellbeing sessions on a Monday morning we have been learning about The Zones of Regulation. This is a framework organised around four colour Zones (Blue, Red, Yellow and Green) that describe feelings, energy and emotions. At the beginning of the year we learnt about a number of feelings in each Zone and what our bodies can look and feel like in this Zone.

In the Blue Zone our brains aren't thinking so well, we feel down. Slow moving.

In the Green Zone we are feeling calm and our bodies are focused. We don’t have to be in the green zone all the time. In the Yellow Zone our feelings are big, but not as big as the red zone. We can have big good feelings and feelings that aren't comfortable.

In the Red Zone we have really big feelings that take over our thinking. Our body has a whole lot of energy.

This Term, we have been learning tools we can use when we are in each Zone to help us regulate our feelings. We discussed tools we could use as a class. Students then made their own toolboxes and filled them with tools they can use when they are experiencing feelings in each Zone. For example; when we are in the Yellow Zone and our bodies are a little out of control we could do ‘wall push ups’, ‘take deep breaths’ or ‘meditate’. When in the Blue Zone and our bodies are slow moving we could ‘read a book’, ‘listen to music’ or ‘go for a walk’. When in the Red Zone and we are feeling out of control we could 'get a drink of water', 'go for a run', 'count to 10'.
