Education in Faith

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B

In this week’s Gospel, Jesus and His disciples are traveling through Galilee. Jesus takes this opportunity to teach them about the nature of true greatness in the kingdom of God. He predicts His suffering, death, and resurrection, but the disciples are preoccupied with arguments about who among them is the greatest.

Jesus' response to their argument is profound. He tells them that to be first, one must be last and serve all. He then places a child in their midst and says that welcoming a child in His name is the same as welcoming Him and the One who sent Him. In this simple yet powerful gesture, Jesus turns worldly notions of power and status upside down.

By using a child as an example, Jesus emphasizes that greatness in the kingdom of God is not about position or power but about humility, service, and unconditional love. Children in Jesus’ time had no status or rights, so their inclusion symbolizes that the greatest in God’s kingdom are those who embrace humility and selfless service.

Discussion Questions:

  • What do you think Jesus means when He says, “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all”? How can we apply this teaching in our daily lives?
  • Jesus places a child in the midst of the disciples and says that welcoming such a child is equivalent to welcoming Him. How does this image challenge our understanding of power and status?
  • Reflect on a time when you experienced or witnessed true humility and selfless service. What impact did it have on you or the community?
  • In what ways might our society’s values conflict with the values Jesus is teaching in this Gospel? How can we strive to align our actions with Jesus’ message of service and humility?
  • How can we cultivate a spirit of humility in our own lives? What are some practical steps we can take to serve others selflessly in our everyday activities?
