What's Happening In Secondary

News and Information from Secondary

Last Thursday, our Year 7 boys got an early start as they embarked on a whole-day fishing trip. The boys arrived at school with smiles and yawns at 7:30am, but were excited for the day ahead. Brushy Lagoon was our destination for the keen fishermen, and the weather and scenic views did not disappoint. As the day began and the lines were cast out, the students were able to practice one of our character traits from our character creed: perseverance. With only some nibbles here and there and no fish being caught, the perseverance was sure tested!

The boys continued to fish and were greeted with a lovely BBQ lunch from Mr Miles, which all the boys needed after many hours of casting lines. To finish the day, the boys split into four groups to come together, learn a new skill and develop leadership in making dampers. The boys were eager to eat their creations but had to wash off their sticky, messy, damper hands first! The damper was a great success and a perfect way to finish our day of fishing before heading back to school. Although no fish were caught, the boys enjoyed a day in nature and spent valuable time with friends.

As the boys went off fishing, our Year 7 girls headed to Hawley Beach for a two night retreat. It was an amazing opportunity for these young ladies to grow in their friendships with one another and self confidence, whilst staying in a beautiful location. Bootcamp, devotions, beach walks, LEGO building, board games, worship sessions, hide and seek and meals shared around the table; their time together was filled with laughter and encouragement that we believe will continue to impact these young people throughout their time in DCS Secondary.

Book Week Parade

This year the official Book Week theme is ‘Reading is Magic’. The DCS community will be celebrating Book Week all this week. This is a very exciting week which culminates in our Book Week Parade this Friday 23rd August from 8.30am in the JILOA Centre, where students have the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character.

Characters should be from a book and not a movie and students are asked to bring along a copy of the book their character is from.

Secondary students who have chosen to dress up for Book Week can participate in the Book Week Parade in our JILOA Centre from 8.30am. All families are warmly invited to join us.

ICAS 2024

Over the next few weeks we continue ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) for students in Year 2 through to Year 8. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to further discover areas of passions and for them to assess their skills in a range of curriculum areas. Over the course of the next few weeks we will see 69 students complete 137 assessments in 6 competitions:

  • Wednesday 21st August - ICAS Spelling
  • Tuesday 27th August - ICAS Maths

The Gathering

As a school we are excited to welcome all families to our Secondary The Gathering Assemblies every Friday.

We wish to advise that there will be no The Gathering this Friday 23rd August but you are welcome to come along at 8:30am and watch our Book Week parade.

Reggie Dabbs at Gateway Church

Gateway Church Devonport would like to invite our school community to an awesome weekend we have coming up with REGGIE DABS!

Reggie Dabbs is one of the most sought-after speakers around the world and visited us at DCS just last year! The NW Coast of Tasmania is so blessed to have him back with us in a few weeks time. We are looking forward to coming together to lift up the name of Jesus and hear from Reggie Dabbs in a powerful way.
