Science Week Assembly

If you are looking for a chef to prepare a gourmet meal for you and your family, Miss Shirley might not be your first choice!

During last week's Science Week Assembly, Miss Shirley presented a variety of unconventional meal alternatives due to a shortage of "correct ingredients". What followed was a series of calamitous and inedible dishes served to the hungry attendees including Mr Cruse, Mrs Davies, Mr Smit and Mr Evans.

The setting was a candlelit table, though Miss Shirley had forgotten the candle and improvised by creating her own version using water and other substances. The diners were treated to 'hopping corn', creme brulee, a boiled egg (in a bottle), and coloured cabbage juice.

The assembly concluded, fittingly, with health-conscious Miss Shirley offering a toothpaste option. While the ingredients for "elephant toothpaste" didn't quite meet dental hygiene standards, they did provide a spectacular finale to the assembly!

A huge thank you to Miss Shirley for her creativity and for enriching the DCS Community with a love of Science.

NWPSSA Sports Expo- Student Reflections

Tennis

On the 14th of August I went to a sports expo in school. This took place at the Devonport Tennis Club. We played against different schools and made a lot of friends. It had rained on the courts, so we got a bit more extra time at recess. While we were playing, the staff from the schools dried off the courts which meant that we could play again. The matches were two against two so I paired up with my friends. That day made me want to start taking tennis lessons, so that I could get better at something I actually enjoy. After two or three rounds we had lunch and then we played two more rounds after that. When it was time to go back to school I didn’t want to, even though I was tired I wanted to play more.

Hockey

When we got to the hockey fields we had to get our shin pads on and get our sticks ready to do some drills with the helpers. We completed a series of drills which included learning how to pass, defend and steal the ball. After these drills we played a game that was rob the nest but hockey style and played in teams of four. After that game we got to do practice shooting at the goals which was a lot of fun.  We played a few games that were umpired against other schools. While playing in one of the games it started to rain, which meant that we got quite wet. We enjoyed playing against other schools and meeting new people.

It was so much fun because I could play with all my friends on the same team. I had never played hockey before and I learned how to stop the ball. It is something that I would play again.

Volleyball

On Wednesday the 14th of August I went to the Latrobe Basketball Stadium to play volleyball. We had a great time. First of all we got put in our groups and had something to eat. They then explained how the day would work and that we would be playing "King of the Hill" style game. We then spent the day playing short volleyball games against all the other schools.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The 2024 Premier's Reading Challenge ends this Friday 23rd August.  Please return all completed log books to the school office by Friday 30th August.

Congratulations to everyone who has already completed and returned their log books.

ICAS 2024

Over the next few weeks we continue ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) for students in Year 2 through to Year 8. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to further discover areas of passion and for them to assess their skills in a range of curriculum areas. Over the course of the next few weeks we will see 69 students complete 137 assessments in 6 competitions:

  • Wednesday 21st August - ICAS Spelling
  • Tuesday 27th August - ICAS Maths

Book Fair

Two of the biggest events on the Library calendar are happening this week:  CBCA Book Week and our annual Book Fair!  CBCA Book Week is from Monday 19th August until Friday 23rd August.  This year the official Book Week theme is ‘Reading is Magic’.

The Book Fair is a great fundraiser for our library and each year we end up with a huge pile of books for the library that happens because of the generosity and support of our school community.

Wish lists will be completed by students during their library time and brought home. Parents are invited to look at the lists, decide which items, if any, you would like to purchase (please note there is no obligation to buy), and return completed wish lists to school (with payment) by Friday 30th August.

Books will be on display next to the school office throughout Book Week, so please feel free to come in and see the books on offer.  The school office is open from 8.00am-3.45pm each school day.

There are 3 ways to pay; online, EFTPOS or cash. If you would like to purchase any items, please return all wish lists to the office by Friday 30th August—all wish lists need to be returned so that we can give each child the correct order. If paying for books online, please ensure you enter the Book Fair site and not the Book Club site.  Books will be ordered once all the wish lists are returned and will be handed out to students so they all receive them at the same time—this usually takes about 3 weeks.

Book Week Parade

This year the official Book Week theme is ‘Reading is Magic’. The DCS Primary community will be celebrating Book Week all this week. This is a very exciting week which culminates in our Book Week Parade this Friday 23rd August from 8.30am in the JILOA Centre, where students have the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character.

Characters should be from a book and not a movie and students are asked to bring along a copy of the book their character is from.

Imagination and fun are what the day is all about so please make the costume for your child that works best for you and your family. Some students like to make their own costumes, some parents like to make them with or without their child’s help, and some like to buy costumes. Any of the above are great—it’s all to promote the love of reading!

Students in Kinder C will have an opportunity to dress up tomorrow, Thursday 22nd August at 8:45am with our Little Sprouts friends.

Father's Day Stalls

DCS Community will be holding their annual Father’s Day stalls on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th August.

Students will have an opportunity to purchase an amazing gift for Dad or a loved one.

Please see above for the days each year level will be able to purchase items.

Items will range in price from $1-$10

Creative Arts Afternoon

You're invited to our Primary Creative Arts Afternoon on Thursday 29th August between 3.30-4.30pm in the Jiloa Centre.

This will be a wonderful afternoon celebrating the creativity of our primary students. There will be students playing musical instruments that they have been learning and all the art competition entries will be on display, as well as a display of some of this year’s primary artwork.   Stay for a short time or the whole hour. We look forward to showcasing our students' varied talents.
