Every child has the right to learn and every teacher has the right to teach.

Lesson Plan: Effort and Behaviour in Class

Step 1: List Learning Intentions and Success Criteria

We are learning to: identify what it looks like to make effort with our work in the classroom

What it looks like: It will look like me showing a positive attitude towards learning, staying focused in class and persisting when work gets challenging.

Step 2:  List a rationale for teaching the behaviour

Why is it important?

Holy Rosary School Values: Relationships, Respect, Resilience, Integrity, Kindness

Holy Rosary School Expectations: Safety is our right. Learning is our responsibility. Respect is our way.

Teachers are always observing the behaviour and effort that students put into their school work and the skills they display that are conducive to learning at a high standard. However, this hasn’t been defined for students, so in order for students to know what is expected of them, we need to make it really clear and explicit. This lesson uses a rubric for students to look at exactly what we mean by behaviour and effort and provide them with the tools to be able to reflect on themselves as learners and self-assess.

Step 3:  Identify examples and non-examples of the desired behaviour What would the behaviour look/sound like?

Examples

Students getting organised for learning, quickly and quietly

Having learning materials organised and ready to go

Staying focused and not getting distracted by others

Having a positive attitude towards their learning

Being considerate of others and respectful towards their learning

Taking time to make sure work is at a high standard

What would the behaviour not look/sound like?

Non-examples

Taking a long time to get organised to start work

Losing books or pencils (learning materials)

Getting distracted by others

Distracting others as they work

Getting work finished as quickly as possible

Not checking or editing work when finished
