WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE MUSIC CLASSROOM…
The topic for this term in Music is Rhythm and Beat. Students are learning how to identify various musical beats, notate the beats via traditional or digital platforms, and use percussion instruments to create, improvise and play rhythmic patterns.
Junior Students:
Our Prep to Year 2 students has been learning the basics of musical beat. Prep students are learning how to identify, notate and count crotchets, crotchet rests and quavers, while Year 1/2 students have done crotchets, crotchet rests, semibreves, minims and quavers. Students have also used percussion instruments such as the triangle, claves and tambourines to play various rhythmic patterns, which not only helps familiarise them with the beats they have been learning, but also builds their ability to play in time with a group.
Students work examples:
Senior Students:
Year 3/4 students have been looking at how to identify, notate and play crotchets, crotchet rests, quavers, minims and crotchet rests. Year 5/6 have learnt semiquavers in addition to the aforementioned beats. In recent weeks, students learnt about bars, bar lines, simple duple (2 beats in a bar), simple triple (3 beats in a bar) and simple quadruple (4 beats in a bar) time. Students were also introduced to “William Tell Overture”, the instrumental introduction to the opera “William Tell” composed by Gioachino Rossini. They learnt the clapstick routine to the overture, and practiced playing it together as a class. In future weeks, students will be using the application: “Score Creator” to compose their own rhythmic patterns.
