Numeracy News
Dear Parents,
Throughout the year we have had on a deep dive into the NSW syllabus content. During our Numeracy Parent Information nights we explored the progression of the 'Number and Algebra' content from Kindergarten to Year 6. In working in partnership with our parent community, we would love to share a deeper insight into the progression of teaching the concept of time within the 'Measurement and Space', 'Non-spatial Measure' content.
The 'time' content is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their numeracy skills engaging in 'Mathematics in the real world'.
Below is an outline of the progression of content which is explicitly taught from Kindergarten to Year 6.
Your child's teacher will provide a variety of learning experiences to explicitly teach this content. At home you can support your child by making connections to 'numeracy in the real world' by providing experiences with the reading and interpreting clocks and calendars.
Ways you can support your child's development of calendars from Kindergarten to Year 2...
- Talking about events during the week
e.g. We have swimming lessons on Tuesday (Kinder), We have swimming lessons on Tuesday 10th of September (Year 1 - Year 2). - Naming and ordering the days of the week (Kinder) and months (Year 1).
- Recalling the number of days in each month using songs or rhymes (Year 1).
- Reading and recording dates on a calendar (Year 1 - Year 2)
- Using a calendar to calculate the time between events
e.g. There are 5 days until my birthday on the 13th of September. Mum's birthday is in one month and 3 days.
Ways you can support your child's development of telling the time in Kindergarten to Year 2...
- Model and practise reading and telling the time for 'o'clock' times (Kinder), 'o'clock' and 'half past' times (Year 1), 'quarter to and quarter past' times (Year 2) on analogue and digital clocks.
Ways you can support your child's development of telling the time in Year 3 to Year 6...
- Model and practise reading and telling the time for to the minute on analogue and digital clocks (Year 3).
- Practise reading and telling the time using the term 'am' and 'pm' (Year 4).
- Reading and converting between 12 and 24 hour time (Year 5 - Year 6)
- Exposure to real life experiences with 12 and 24 hour time (Year 5 - Year 6)
e.g. reading train timetables, flight times
