Wellbeing & Learning Diversity

Wellbeing

R U OK? Day is an annual initiative dedicated to inspiring and empowering people to connect with others and support each other through life’s ups and downs. This day is all about asking the simple but powerful question, “Are you OK?” and genuinely listening to the answer.

Why is R U OK? Day Important?

In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to overlook the mental and emotional health of ourselves and those around us. R U OK? Day encourages us to check in with friends, family, and colleagues, creating a culture of support and understanding. By taking the time to ask and listen, we can help prevent isolation and promote mental wellness within our community.

How Can You Support R U OK? Day at Home?

  • Have Conversations: Take some time to ask your child, “Are you OK?” and really listen to their response. Encourage open and honest communication.
  • Be Informed: Learn about mental health resources and support services available in your community so you can provide guidance if needed.

Screen Time

Time Online

During these school holidays, most children will be wanting time to play online games with their friends. However it is important that children have a healthy balance between their online and offline activities.

Screen Time

There is no magic number of hours students should be spending online or in front of a screen. This all depends on the child's age and maturity and the kind of content they are consuming. It is important to consider your child’s screen time in their overall health and wellbeing- is this time getting in the way of physical exercise or sleep? Is it impacting their relationships and face-to-face connections with family and friends?

Managing screen time at home

  • Remain aware of what your child is accessing online and who they are interacting with. Remain in conversation with them about what they are doing and who they are chatting with.
  • Join in. Be a part of their online games or sit with them to enjoy their television show.
  • Set device free-zones. Bedrooms and the dinner table are great places to start. It is important that all members follow these rules!

Ideas for the holidays

Here are some active ideas for the holidays:

  • Get on your Bike! A great way to stay healthy, active and to explore a new part of your suburb.
  • Day Out! The Museum, Art Gallery and the Zoo are all great experiences to keep yourself and your child active and to make learning fun!
  • Decide together! The Victorian Government has put together  a web page full of school holiday ideas! There are craft, well-being and outdoor ideas and activities that are free to do. These are great activities for the whole family.
  • Cooking! This is another great way to get the whole family involved. Pick a favourite meal or make a lucky dip of the different healthy meals that can be cooked. Getting your children in the kitchen is a great way of learning about healthy eating.
  • Explore a new park. Here is a list of playgrounds around the Melbourne Area that are ready to be explored. Take a picnic lunch and invite friends.
