HUON & SASSAFRAS | CLEVER CLASS

Grade 5 Mackillop Science Excursion

Grade 5 students went to Mackillop College during Week 4. We buddied up with Grade 8 students at Mackillop. The students were split into two groups, and we participated in different activities. The focus of the activities was biology. In one of the activities, students had to draw an outline of a body and then draw the organs inside the body with the assistance of some pictures. Another activity was using microscopes to look at living things close up. We viewed bugs, worms, spiders, leaves and much more.

Grade 6 Makey Makeys - Digital Technologies

Whilst Grade 5 students were on the Science excursion, Grade 6 students explored Makey Makeys. Makey Makeys are peripheral devices that allow you to turn everyday objects into instruments. We used Scratch to code the buttons on the Makey Makeys and then attached the buttons to conductive objects with alligator clips. We discovered that anything made of metal is conductive and allows electricity to pass through. We also discovered that we are conductors as well. We have since used the Makey Makeys in Science to complete an electric circuit to test objects to see whether they are conductors or insulators.

Huon and Sassafras Blessed Carlo Excursion

Last Friday, students had the privilege of going to Mackillop College to see a display of Blessed Carlo and his relic which is currently touring Tasmania. Blessed Carlo died in 2006 when he was only fifteen and is next in line to be canonised as a saint.

Mr Prichard’s mum gave us a talk about him and we learnt about his life, his interests and the type of person he was.
