HEALTH

A CELEBRATION OF SUCCESS

Health 2024 deserves to be celebrated! A diverse range of amazing foods have been carefully created and an extensive amount of learning (and fun) has been experienced across all subject areas of Health. As the Health Learning Area Manager, I am proud and very fortunate to be a part of such a talented, successful and motivated team who unite to consistently deliver quality knowledge and support to our students.

Year 7 Food Technology:  Over the course of 2024, the students have delighted many newsletter readers with their commendable skills and capabilities in the kitchen. In theory lessons, the students have been working towards establishing an understanding of nutrition, positive food choices and healthy living and have investigated and selected strategies to promote health. They have been investigating the characteristics and properties of food techniques when creating solutions for healthy eating.

They are also very skilled at providing a detailed sensory analysis on a range of food products.

Thank you to all Year 7 students for bringing such delight to our kitchen spaces; your enthusiasm and overall enjoyment of cooking and learning new skills is why we are such a successful team.

Year 9 Food Technology: To support the importance of cross curricular studies, students have successfully been able to link their Science knowledge with Food Technology. The STEAM coursework supports students’ ability to think critically to solve problems, and design and create solutions. Throughout 2024, the students have investigated the principles of food safety, preservation, preparation, presentation and sensory perceptions influence the creation of food solutions for healthy eating.

A very big shout out goes to all the Year 9 students who participated in Food Technology in 2024. We are very proud of your achievements and look forward to seeing you back in the kitchen in 2025.

Budding 2024 master chefs in Year 10 Food Technology had the opportunity to extend their knowledge regarding food culture and cuisine by investigating Indigenous foods and foods from around the world. The ‘Main meal investigation’ task is always a crowd pleaser, and all Year 10 students rose to the challenge and produced a range of outstanding dishes.

Congratulations to all Year 10 students who undertook Food Technology this year. Your diligence and motivation to succeed is to be commended and your teachers are very proud of you!

Year 10 Health students involved in the elective throughout 2024 were intrinsically motivated and pursued the importance of understanding major concepts including social justice, equality and equity. They paved their way through highly engaging classes based on the value of health and wellbeing at an individual level and its significance to their families and communities.

Throughout the year, the students reviewed the lifespan stage, youth growth and development with a particular focus on developing / strengthening resilience, decreasing stress and learning how to apply coping strategies. A collaboration between MCK and students of Valkstone Primary school involved McKinnon Health students preparing and delivering engaging lessons to the Primary school students. The objective of this was to support their learning of development that takes place during childhood.

Year 10 Health students, you have shone very brightly in 2024. Thank you for your incredible work; you are all superstars.

VCE Food Studies + Health and Human Development:  The ‘Health’ team could not be more impressed with the cohort of students who completed VCE Food Studies and VCE Health and Human Development. Throughout the year, all VCE students celebrated many successes. The students worked consistently in their chosen subject areas. They actively seeked regular feedback and more importantly applied the feedback effectively to their work. They worked independently and collaborated with their peers, which strengthened their overall knowledge and application of content. These attributes enabled all students to enjoy their learning, emphasising that ‘knowledge is power’.

The VCE Food Studies and Health and Human Development students never shy away from a challenge; their level of resilience was a springboard for academic success and personal growth.

To the Unit 3 + 4 Food Studies and Human Development classes of 2024, we wish you well on your life journey and we thank you for turning up and giving it your all. We are very proud of your achievements.

The ‘Health’ teachers and our kitchen angels, Raelene and Charlotte, are all looking forward to watching our student’s learning expand even further in 2025. Thank you to parents / guardians / carers for your ongoing support.

Wishing you a happy and safe holiday break.

YEAR 9 FOOD TECHNOLOGY

For our major assessment task in Year 9 Food Technology students selected ingredients and planned, prepared and cooked a breakfast. They had access to a variety of foods and were challenged to create a breakfast that was not only nutritious but also well-balanced and delicious. After preparing their breakfast they evaluated the success of their meal based on factors such as taste, presentation, nutritional value, and overall preparation.

 Souffle Pancakes with Fresh Strawberries

Lara Van Lint, Year 9

Korean Omelette Rice

Annabelle Teo, Year 9

Breakfast Berry Bake

Amy Yang, Year 9

Breakfast Muffins

Skyler Chong, Year 9

It is fair to say that most students approached this task with great enthusiasm, and many chose to bring ‘extra’ ingredients from home to enhance their dishes. For many, it is the highlight of the Year 9 Food Technology course.

Some students thought outside the square with their dishes and produced the following meals.
