MCK RESPECT #NOEXCUSES COMMUNITY WALK

On Friday 29 November a united McKinnon Secondary College community spoke out about violence against women by participating in the launch of the McK Respect Project.

Students, families and community organisations came together to show their support for ending gender-based violence by walking 16 laps of the back oval. The walk coincided with the United Nations 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, a global campaign that acknowledges the alarmingly high levels of violence against women and children across the globe. Each lap people took sent a powerful message that violence and disrespect will not be tolerated in our community. It was wonderful to see so many of our community passionate about taking a stand on this important issue.

We extend our gratitude to the following community organisations for their support: Headspace, Glen Eira Youth Services, Tomorrow Man/Tomorrow Woman, the Proactive Policing Unit, and Miracle Paws with Chilli and Milo. Thank you all for being part of the McK Respect Community Walk.

We were also delighted to have the state member for Bentleigh, Nick Staikos, Kim Carter and Simon Brown from the Department of Education Respectful Relationship team walk alongside us.

This event marked our whole school commitment to creating a future where family violence and gender inequality are not tolerated. We look forward to implementing the McK Respect Project in 2025 and acknowledge that gender stereotypes and gender inequality are one of the lead contributors to family violence.

McKinnon Secondary College is committed to generating lasting changes in young people’s attitudes and behaviours which will endeavour to prevent family violence. We recognise that as a school community, we have the opportunity to lead, influence and contribute to a healthy community culture. The walk brought the school community together to stand up and speak out against gender inequality and gendered violence. Together, we are the change.
