ZORBA DANCE CLUB
After noticing the large number of participants at last year's “Zorba till you drop” competition during cultural diversity week, Ms Calpouzani decided to begin a weekly Zorba Dance club teaching students Greek dancing. This club is held in the Bernonneit area at East Campus every Wednesday lunch time and is open for anybody interested in trying traditional Greek dancing.
Students often come over with their friends after hearing the Zorba music, then decide to join in together and learn the basics of Greek dancing. Despite not knowing anything about Greek dancing prior to this, students enjoy the experience and often come back the following week!
Greek dancing is an integral part of Greek culture and tradition. It is an experience that anyone can have which brings people together in something that can be both challenging and fun. The Zorba club allows students to immerse themselves in Greek culture and step out of their comfort zones, whilst also creating a sense of community.
Dimitra Ioannidou & Costa Vardavakis Year 9
Thank you to the Year 9 students Alex Bouris, Katherine Hortis, Dimitra Ioannidou, Costa Vardavakis who went beyond having fun only. They shared their talent with the wider school community, motivated bystanders of various cultural backgrounds and assisted me with teaching Greek dance to inexperienced students.
Wishing them success in their senior school years.
