Learn what opportunities our students have been taking on
Recently, our Year 8 cohort were challenging themselves whilst at the Roses Gap Recreation Centre for their year level camp. The theme of the camp, 'fears and friendships', provided students with the opportunity to get our of their comfort zone, support their peers and develop friendships through a number of fear-facing challenges and group building activities.
"My favourite memory was probably having the camp fire and just talking to people I wouldn't usually. The activities helped me realise that I can do certain things even if my mind tells me I can't, like abseiling."
"The scariest activity for me was the abseiling because it felt like there was nothing behind me. While the activities were scary, they made me overcome my fear of heights. Our goal on the last day of camp was to make someone's day better so I cheered people on while they were doing the activities."
"My favourite memory was all of us jumping around and singing together, it was so fun. I liked getting to know people and hanging out with people I don't usually talk to, and overcoming my fears on the Giant Swing."
Last week our Year 9 students participated in the FutureMe Program delivered as part of the Deakin Equity and Access Program (DEAP). This was the first time that the program had been delivered in Horsham, providing our students with a unique opportunity to work with inspiring mentors from Deakin University to explore their future pathways.
Students attended a variety of workshops over three days. The first workshop focused on the future world of work where students explored the employability skills required to navigate it. On day two, students began preparing for the speed meeting activity where they would later interview members of our community about their career pathways and journeys. In the final session, students reflected on the skills they developed throughout the program and identified their own strategies for further developing their employability skills.
Thank you to Nicky Suter and her student ambassadors, Kyra, Felicity, Conor, Emily, Daniel, and Althea from Deakin University for running the program. It was especially great to welcome back Kyra and Felicity, who are former St Brigid's College students.
Thank you to the community members who volunteered their time for the speed meeting session, your support was greatly appreciated.
This week, our Year 8 students were joined at St Brigid's by students from Murtoa College and Holy Trinity Lutheran College to participate in the Raising Aspirations in Career Education in Agriculture (RACE) Program. The program was delivered by Lily and Grace from the University of Queensland, in partnership with the Wimmera Southern Mallee LLEN. This event allowed students to build awareness of diverse opportunities that the food and fibre industry can offer. Students attended two workshops: Tractor Code Creators and Honey Investigators . The program was a great experience for all students involved!
