Spotlight on Learning - Room 7
It’s that wonderful time of year again—Book Week! From 19th of August to the 23rd of August, our school will be buzzing with the excitement of stories, imagination, and the joy of reading. This year’s theme is "Reading is Magic," and we had a fantastic time completing activities to ignite a love for books in every student.
One of the highlights from our Book Week celebrations was a special feature on the delightful picture book That Bird Has Arms by Jol Temple and Kate Temple. This charming and humorous tale has captured the hearts of readers young and old with its whimsical illustrations and the story of a very unusual bird who discovers that having arms isn’t as easy as it seems. The book’s themes of self-acceptance, curiosity, and embracing differences will resonate with our students, sparking discussions and creative projects throughout the week. Our middle Primary classes joined together to celebrate Roy and what makes him different by writing supportive ‘tweets’. Students crafted caring messages to show support for Roy and to encourage him to accept that his uniqueness made him beautiful. Pictured below are our tweets for you to enjoy.
Another book week title we have explored was Bear and Duck are Friends by Sue DeGennaro. This charming story takes us on an adventure with two unlikely friends, Bear and Duck, who teach us about the power of friendship and the importance of accepting each other’s differences.
In Bear and Duck are Friends, Bear is a gentle giant who loves to read and enjoy quiet moments, while Duck is full of energy and always up for fun. Despite their differences, the two discover that true friendship is about embracing each other’s unique qualities and finding joy in their shared experiences. DeGennaro’s engaging illustrations and heartfelt narrative create a warm and whimsical world that will resonate with readers of all ages.
To celebrate the themes of friendship from Bear and Duck are Friends, we’re excited to introduce our "Ideal Friend Collage" activity. This creative project encourages students to think about what makes a good friend and how they can show appreciation for their own friends.
We encourage all families to get involved by reading together at home, discussing your favourite books, and sharing in the joy that Book Week brings.
