It's Science Week!!!

Science Week - August 10-18, 2024

This week we celebrate National Science Week. This is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology and was introduced in 1997 to inspire young learners to engage in science. This year the theme is Species Survival: More than just sustainability”. It’s about understanding that we’re all part of the big, interconnected web of life. Every creature, from the bees that pollinate our fruit trees to the worms that enrich our soil, plays an essential part. Their survival doesn’t just protect nature’s beauty, it ensures the health of the ecosystems that provide our food, clean water and the air we breathe.

At St Joseph’s science learning and teaching aims to develop the scientific knowledge, skills and dispositions needed for successful lifelong learners, who can make informed decisions about local, national and global issues. Students are given various opportunities to engage in biological, physical, chemical and earth sciences throughout the year. Through our inquiry learning and our learning community themes students are supported to explore the science of their local bay, food science, robotics and much more. This term students are exploring physical sciences and designing toys, water vessels and eco friendly homes. Their learning and creations will be shared with the community at the end of term.

This week our 1/2 students are also going to the Melbourne museum to deepen their knowledge of the mechanics behind some toys and how this has changed through history.  Our other learning communities will be engaging in various science explorations connected their inquiry.  We invite all of our families to come on Friday to our Science Week - Family Fun Friday. We also encourage families to explore ways they can take part in Science week. For ideas click on this link to the Science Week site.

Book Week - August 17-23, 2024

Book Day Dress Up - Friday August 23rd

Each year, across Australia, the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) brings children and books together celebrating Children’s Book Week. Throughout the year, the CBCA works in partnership with authors, illustrators, publishers, booksellers and other organisations in the children’s book world to bring words, images and stories into the hearts and minds of children and adults.

Each year we celebrate Book day at St Joseph's where we encourage students to dress up as their favourite book characters and they take part in activities around the nominated books. This year our dress up day is Friday August 23rd and we cant wait to see all of the amazing costumes on the day!
