Gospel of Matthew 16: 21-27, 3 September

Jesus Predicts his Death

This Gospel reading can be challenging for anyone, even a believer and it may be because of the way Jesus responded to Peter.  At this time, Jesus shared what he was predicting would happen to him leading up to his death.  Peter, being a strong and concerned friend, said, “This shall never happen to you!” Jesus replied to his friend, “Get behind me Satan!”

Jesus knew that his death was essential to allow God’s plan to come to fruition.  Jesus also knew that Peter would deny him.  He reminded all the disciples of how important it is to follow Jesus through all of life’s struggles and to carry their cross.

Peter in fact, would become ‘the rock’ and foundation of our church. Creating the Kingdom of God on earth is our mission and this church would be one that would help others especially our vulnerable.

We pray today for all of God's people, so that we may help one another through the struggles and challenges. We don't always know what cross people are carrying, but with the power of the Holy Spirit may we be compassionate and discerning.
