Term 3 Week 8 - Friday 1st September 2023
What have we been up to?
It’s been a busy couple of weeks for our Year 1 and 2 students but we have filled them with lots of wonderful learning experiences. In Reading, we have spent the last two weeks learning about inferences. Students have read a number of texts to allow them to firstly recognise what an inference is and then make them while reading a text. The Big Red Strawberry was a great text to use inferences to work out why the mouse was feeling a particular emotion and why they were behaving in a particular way. Students used clues from the text such as the Mouses' facial expression to determine what emotion they were likely to be feeling.
In writing we have been exploring a range of different poems including the traditional Japanese poem called a Tanka and the Diamante poem which is shaped like a diamond. Students have been learning about the different structures of both of these poem types and have successfully written their own Tanka and Diamante Poems which they would be happy to share with you in their leadership notebooks.
In Maths students have begun a 4 week unit of work about the foundations of multiplication. Students have been learning what the multiplication symbol means and how multiplication can be represented as different groups. They have also been learning about how these can be represented as an array and strategies for working out the number of rows and how many are in each row.
Inquiry has allowed students to develop their understanding of the world they live in by exploring different continents and their surrounding waterways. Students have learnt that there are seven different continents on earth and begun recognising where those continents are located on a globe. In Science, students have been investigating the water cycle and the different stages over the water cycle. They also created a small scale water cycle using a ziplock bag and some warm water.
Here are some photo highlights from the fortnight that was!
1/2A - In Science, we learnt about the water cycle and created our own in a zip lock bag!
1/2B- Book Week costume day!
1/2C - We loved dressing up for Book Week. We also said farewell to Yoyo and wished him well on his return to China.
What is coming up?
Reading

Students will be introduced to a variety of poetry types. Together as a class they will learn their structure, language features and attempt to write them together and independently.
Maths
In the next two weeks the students will continue to develop their foundational skills in multiplication. They will be introduced to simple language and ways they can multiply. These include arrays, repeated addition and groups of.
