Intermediate Soccer team at the State finals

Intermediate Soccer : State Finals

On Tuesday 29th of August the Year 9&10 Girl’s Soccer team travelled to the School Sport Victoria State Soccer finals at Darebin International Sports Centre. The team was excited for the day having won through to the State final very convincingly. In their first game they started the day well with a strong win against MacRobertson Girls High School 5 - 2. In their second game Northcote came up against Ballarat High School and after a dominant performance they managed to score 7 goals and kept a clean sheet, final score 7 - 0. They continued their run of form finishing their third game with a come from behind victory after conceding early and winning the game 2 -1. Their 3 wins from 3 games meaning they qualified for the Grand Final, where they would face off against Maribyrnong College. In the grand final the girls battled hard and showed plenty of fight, but Maribyrnong showed their class and experience and ended up the victors with a 4-0 win. The girls should be extremely proud of their efforts and finished the day as runner up in the State Final. All of the Year 9&10 students played very well it was a fantastic display of a great team performance.

Year 7 Table Tennis

Last Wednesday, the Year 7 table tennis teams competed in the division competition. We had an abundance of players this year, with both boy’s and girl’s A and B teams. The boys’ teams showed great spirit and played with great sportsmanship. They stayed focused and didn’t let many setbacks get to them. After some intense matches, the year 7 boy’s A team made it to the finals. In these finals the boys faced off against Preston High School who seemed pretty tough. The matches and sets were tied, and the winner came down to the team that scored the most points. After finding out the results of this nail-biter, many cheers could be heard. The boy’s A team won by 7 points!

The girls played some great matches against their oppositions with both teams not losing against another school. The girls A team made it through to Regionals after beating Preston in the finals. They had a tough road to get there, having to grind a win against Thornbury to qualify for the play offs. In the final match both Northcote and Preston were at a draw with 3 matches won each. It came down to how many sets they each won and our girls ended up winning 7-5. Thank you for the hard work and dedication of these players and especially to Mr. Ghafari for the great day and to Paulsie for driving us to and from the venue!

Regional Athletics

As is often the case out at Meadowglen Athletics track, we once again hit cold, wet and blustery conditions for Regional Athletics which was held on August 30. The weather unfortunately meant that our hurdlers and high jumpers had their events postponed as it was deemed too dangerous.  They will get their opportunity to compete early next term.

We had a team of 26 students competing at this meet. Despite the conditions, we had many students come home with medals and achieve *PB’s. We had several students who have progressed through to State, we may have some more once our hurdlers and high jumpers have competed.

The highlight of the day for me was twins Niamh and Amira Tabit competing in their last Regional Athletics.  Now in Year 12 we saw the girls once again have success, and qualify for the State Athletics competition . They have both have made it through to State every year since year 7.  They truly are quiet achievers.

The following students qualified to compete at State Athletics in Term 4

Wolfgang Curry – Triple Jump and 400m (still to compete in Hurdles and High Jump)

Niamh Tabit – 3000m and 1500m

Amira Tabit – 1500m and 800m

Thomas Follis-Kirby 200m and 100m

Sophia Xintaropoulos – Shot Put

Yahia Eissa -1500m  Walk

*rumour has it that one parent's bank account is depleting rapidly as his son has struck a deal of a dollar amount each time he shaves his PB!

Year 7 Basketball

The year 7 boys A team put on a strong performance at the division tournament on Monday, September 4th. After winning all three of their pool games, the boys came up against Preston in the final to get through to regionals. We knew this was going to be a tough challenge for the boys. By halftime, the scores were close, and the boys were only down by a few points. Unfortunately, the game blew out, and Northcote lost. The boys did super well to get to the final and put in their best efforts throughout the day.

The boys B team also played some really good basketball throughout the day and worked well together as a team. They didn’t give up, even if the score wasn’t always going their way. Overall, the boys and girls all encouraged each other during the day and had a really great time at Narrandjeri Stadium.

Australian Cross Country Championships

Congratulations to year 12 students Niamh and Amira Tabit, who represented Victoria at the Australian Cross Country Championships, Stromlo Forest Park, Canberra, on 25- 26 August.

In the under 20 age group 6 km race,  Amira placed 27th  (7th placed Victorian runner) and Niamh 31st (10th Victorian runner across the line) from a field of around 80 girls selected across Australia. It was a flat, fast grass running track, which combined some tough challenging hill sections and hay bales on each of the circuit loops.  Overall the Victorian team placed first in the U20s, a fantastic achievement!

Thanks to everyone who competed and helped out with our busy term of sport.  Looking forward to Term 4!
