Milo and Musings
The Student Wellbeing Team hosted our first ever Year 7 and 8 Milo and Musings event last week. It was great to see so many Junior School students lining up (and offering to help out!) to get their cup of Milo and meet the Student Wellbeing team. In addition to a delicious malty beverage, this event reminded students about wellbeing support that can be accessed at school and who and where to go for help. Milo Musings was also a soft launch for the amazing activities lined up for our upcoming Mental Health Week (Week 2, Term 4). Keep your eyes peeled on the next edition of the newsletter for more insider information!
R U OK? Day
On Thursday 14th September we celebrate is R U OK? Day. This important day supports suicide prevention efforts by encouraging people to invest more time in their personal relationships; their friends, family and colleagues. R U OK? Day reminds us to be alert to those around us, to have a conversation if we see signs of distress or difficulty and to connect people to appropriate support, long before they're in crisis. We all have a role to play in looking out for those we care about at home, work or in our community. Ask, 'are you OK?' – because a conversation could change a life.
Learning how to support your peers and how to talk about how you feel is an important life lesson for students. So where better to start than in the classroom? This year, students will participate in Connect activities aimed at supporting them to start an ‘are you OK?’ conversation.
Mental Health Week 2023
The Student Services Wellbeing Team are so excited to announce Northcote High’s Mental Health Week. Students will participate in many fun activities throughout the week. This will be a great opportunity to boost positive mood and build awareness of mental health services available. We’re looking forward to our biggest event this year – and yes, there will be DOGS!!!
Don’t forget to put Mental Health Week in your diaries: Week 2, Term 4.

Tuning in to Kids
Tuning into Kids (TiK) is a program that provides parents and carers with skills in emotion coaching.
Emotion coaching is about recognising, understanding and managing your own emotions as a caregiver as well as your children’s emotions.
When children develop these emotional skills, they are better equipped to negotiate the ups and downs of life.
TiK is an evidence-based program; randomised controlled research trials have shown that it makes a difference to parents and children.

Looking after your wellbeing during the holidays
We are officially three quarters of the way through the year! School holidays are a great chance to take a break, reconnect with friends, hobbies and family (and sure, the sleep-ins are a nice bonus too!). While it can be tempting to let go of routines over the holidays, maintaining some momentum, or even using the extra time to set some goals for yourself can be really beneficial.
Students might like to explore the Fabulous! app to help build physically and mentally healthy routines. For those who need some further support This Way Up offers a range of evidence-based programs to support young people feeling stressed, sad or anxious. You can check out this comprehensive list from Reach Out for many other health and wellbeing apps that can help you get started.
Like students and teachers, the Student Wellbeing team also take a break over the holidays. If you require support during this time, please see the below resources.
We look forward to welcoming students back in Term 4!
