Dear Families & Friends,
With the first day of Spring today, there are welcoming signs that the weather is warming and the days are getting longer. As a Catholic school community, it is also an opportunity to reflect on appreciate and give thanks for the beauty of God's creation. Alongside this appreciation, we can also reflect on what means to be a steward of creation and the responsibility we have to care for the environment. Pope Francis's encyclical "Laudato Si'" released in 2015, addresses the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic issues. It emphasizes the concept of "integral ecology," which recognizes that environmental problems are intertwined with issues of human dignity, justice, and the common good.
Our Sacred Heart Living Vision, co-constructed with the children and school community, reflects the concept of Taking Action. There are many ways in which the students can 'take action' including showing leadership, living by example and being courageous. A constant thread weaving through our words and actions at Sacred Heart is the importance of caring for our world and local environment. Educators model by example through simple actions such as cleaning up after ourselves, sustainability practices and resetting spaces for others we may use them next. In doing so, we are showing our children the importance of doing the same to ensure Sacred Heart is a safe, welcoming and happy place to be.
This morning, our school community welcomed our Dads and special father figures in the lives of our Sacred Heart children to school for a yummy Father's Day Breakfast of croissants & coffee. As you can see from the photos below, it was a wonderful morning and a special celebration of fatherhood.
As we celebrate Father's Day on Sunday, we also recall the man who is our parish namesake, St. Joseph. Joseph was the husband of Mary and was chosen by God to be the guardian and protector of Jesus during his childhood and early years. Whilst little is known about Joseph, we do know that he was a kind, caring and loving man who cared deeply for Mary and Jesus and is an example of how we can care for those who are special to us.
A big thank you also to the Sacred Heart staff for making the Father's Day Breakfast possible. It takes many hands and an early start to be ready for a day like today.
Last, but by no means least, thank you also to the team of parents who prepared and organised gifts for the children to purchase at the Father's Day Gift Stall during the week. Thank you to Michaela McGee, Bec Greaves, Meaghan Lavelle, Megan Princiotti, Phil Stewart, Kathryn Watson, Penny Zervas and Sally Malady for giving of your time so generously.
In a Catholic school, the importance of school uniforms is often tied to the values, principles, and mission of the Catholic faith and the same can be said of our Sacred Heart school uniform.
At Sacred Heart Primary School, our school uniform also serves to foster a sense of community and belonging. It contributes to a sense of unity among students, parents, and staff by creating a shared identity and a common visual symbol of the school's Catholic mission and values. When out in public, either on excursion or before and after school, our Sacred Heart school uniform can serve as a witness to the broader community, reflecting the school's commitment to fostering character development, academic excellence, and a faith-filled life.
It is a school wide expectation that all students are wearing full school uniform at all times, unless there is a special event or it has been otherwise communicated. Over the winter months, there has been an increasing number of students coming to school with incorrect uniform, including shoes.
We ask for your support in ensuring your child is dressed in the correct school uniform each day. Sports uniform should only be worn when there is a PE lesson scheduled or interschool sports. Over the weeks, teachers will be extra vigilant in reminding children of correct uniform. If your child does not have an item, you can purchase it from our uniform supplier in Port Melbourne (PSW) or ask the office to purchase from our onsite second hand cupboard.
Last but not least, please ensure that all uniform items are correctly labelled with names as it makes it much easier to return items to their owners.
The First Eucharist is a significant sacramental event in the Catholic Church. It marks the occasion when a young Catholic child receives the Eucharist, which is the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, for the first time. This sacrament is an integral part of the Catholic faith, as it signifies a deeper connection with Christ and participation in the communal life of the Church.
This Sunday, the final group of Year 4 Sacred Heart students will be receiving the Sacrament of First Eucharist. Once again, each of the children will be in my thoughts and prayers as they participate in this very special day on their faith journey.
We wish all of our Dads and special father figures a very special day on Sunday for Father's Day!
To our Year 6 students, we hope you have an amazing time on camp at Mt Buller and we look forward to some great photos and hearing all about it on your return.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Kaylene
We have some ladders and some gazebos that we no longer need. If you or someone you know are interested in purchasing some from the school please contact the office.
