BOOK WEEK is here
"The library is not just full of books, but also opportunities."

"READ, GROW, INSPIRE
21 - 25 August
This week the students have had the opportunity to guess how many "red hats" - lollipops are in a jar. Thank you to the Library Leaders for their assistance.
Winners announced tomorrow.
Dress - up Parade - Friday 25th August: Students may come to school dressed up or change into their costume at school if it is difficult to wear on the bus.
When we READ we GROW in many ways. Reading helps us to grow by increasing our knowledge, teaching us new skills, and helping us to understand our emotions and feelings and those of others. When we read we are INSPIRED to believe in what can be, who we can be and our imagination soars to places we never thought it could.
Students had the opportunity to come in and listen to author interviews provided by the Premier"s Reading Challenge.
They included Matt Stanton, Remy Lai, and Corey Tutt.
The students enjoyed voting for the books which they thought would be the winners.
Most students voted for "Runt" Craig Silvey. However the Early Childhood and Picture book category was a surprise. Most of us felt that "Frank's Red Hat"
and "Dirt By Sea"
would be clear winners, but that's the joy of reading -
WE ALL LIKE DIFFERENT TEXTS AND HAVING A VOICE AND CHOICE. WHEN VISITING THE LIBRARY IT MEANS WE CAN ENJOY MANY BOOKS.
*Picture Book Of The Year - "My Strange Shrinking Parents" Zeno Sworder
It goes without saying that all children believe their parents to be strange. Mine were unusual for a different reason…
*Early Childhood Book Of The Year "Where The Lyrebird Lives" Vikki Conley
High in the mountains through the sleepy clouds. Deep in the forest past the chiming birds. Will we see the lyrebird? I don’t know.
*Younger Readers Book Of The Year "Runt" Craig Silvey
"You don't have to carry the weight of the world in your tool belt."
As you can see the tree is covered in beautiful leaves. Students have written the name of their favourite book on a leaf and our tree is GROWING before our eyes.
As I walked down to the library on Tuesday morning I was met with a sea of colourful headwear, namely the beanie.
A story about never giving up on your talents, because even though what you do may not be appreciated right now, it may be in time and from an unexpected audience. This book opened up conversations about risk taking, difference and perseverance. In fact when his red beanie was deemed a failure he thought it was because of the colour so he persisted trying new and varied colours of cyan. The students had a fabulous day sporting their beanies to celebrate this inspiring text.
This week the much anticipated visits to the Town Library continue.
These visits are part of the St Nicholas School BOOK WEEK celebrations highlighting the important role libraries, both school and community, play in building our reading depth and interest and servicing our needs as students and a school community.
This year a new component was introduced on the visit - the Innovation Studio.
This week Yr 1, Yr 6, Yr 2 and Yr 5 classes visited the library.
Kindergarten's visit has been rescheduled to next Tuesday, 29 Aug.
More pics from the visits.
BOOK BUSTERS CLUB is an optional early morning reading club for students who wish to come into the warm library before school to read.

No food or drink on my books.
Food and drink are for the chooks.
Library bags keep ‘em clean.
Books are cool don’t treat ‘em mean.
Bring your bag every time.
Fill it up and get in line.
Have it scanned and scoot on out.
