Throughout this term some Bairnsdale Secondary College students from Years 7-10 participated in the International Competition and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) in a range of key learning areas. You may recall that out top 20 Year 10 Maths students were invited to participate. The results are in!
Congratulations to all students who participated. We are very proud to announce the following extra special results:
CREDIT CERTIFICATES MERIT CERTIFICATES

Student Mitchell's results indicate that he is in the 87th percentile in Australia, an exceptional result. Mitchell looks forward to studying Software Engineering in the future.
We wish all of our students’ well on their educational journey and look forward to seeing where their paths take them.
Success for BSC English as an additional language (EAL) students!
Bairnsdale Secondary College is receiving an increase in the number of enrolments of students for whom English is not their first language.
Mandarin speaking Junlin arrived at our school from China in October 2021 with very limited English. Gradually, with assistance from many of our staff, Junlin’s English language has developed and he is now in Year 12 and on the home stretch for completing his VCE. Junlin’s VCE subjects include English and a range of Mathematics and Science subjects. Junlin has worked extremely hard and proven that language isn’t a barrier to achieving success in VCE, especially in Maths and Science subjects.
Pictured, Junlin is carrying out a Physics experiment with support from staff.
On Wednesday the 6th of September the Year 9 Enterprising People Class and the Year 11 Business Management class held a market day. This allowed the students to plan, market and run an enterprise of their own choice. Enterprises that were running on the day included: biscoff slice, spiders, fairy bread, frogs in ponds, cookies, rum balls, rocky road, build your own burgers and much more!
Thanks to all the staff and students who supported the student’s enterprises. The classes managed to donate $300 profit to the Cancer Council charity.
VCE Outdoor education - Overnight Canoe Trip
The year 11 and 12 VCE Uutdoor Ed class took on the recent challenge to canoe and camp over two days. The group travelled to Nowa Nowa to then canoe to Ironbark campground with their camping packs. After five hours of canoeing, the crew arrived at the campground. Students then set up camp, prepared their dinner, participated in group games and discuss how they can learn from their day to reflect on to their outdoor ed studies. The following day, students packed up camp and prepared their canoe for the trip back to Nowa Nowa. The group were blessed with fantastic weather conditions and travelled an outstanding 25km over two days. It is confident to say that the Year 11 and 12 students enjoyed their experience.
Year 10 Evolve or Perish
Students in Year 10 Evolve or Perish (biology) elective made ‘body fossils’. Admittedly we cheated and used plaster rather than waiting a few million years for mud to become compacted into sedimentary rock! This forms part of our work understanding how ‘homologous structures’ seen in fossils and modern animals provide evidence of common ancestors and changes in species over time due to adaptations to the environment.
Year 11 Food Studies
Year 11 Food Studies students made pork cutlets with noodles and spicy slaw.
Year 10 Food for You
Year10 Food for You students made an assessment practical for their Eat Good, Feel Good Common assessment task making healthy fast food.
Year 10 Food Choices
The student made spring rolls. Lucky hub staff were given some to taste and they were delish.
Staff members have had the opportunity of seeing our hospitality students, cook, plating up and serving beautiful food to the public at the Oaktree Restaurant.
Ending term in the Sunshine!
