Year 7-10 Teaching and Learning

A busy term of teaching and learning comes to an end.  This term has provided our Year 7-10 students with a range of learning experiences which has created an energetic and engaging environment at our college.

Year 10 students completed a successful two week work experience placement in addition to their subject selection and senior pathway interviews at the Wurun Campus.  These interviews are most important in providing an opportunity for our students to think carefully about their strengths and passions, and consider learning goals and study habits. The next stage of this process, once subjects are confirmed, will be the Early Commencement Program in Term 4 where students will get a ‘taste’ of their selected subjects as an introduction to their senior pathway.

Year 9 have completed a resume and CV in preparation for their mock job interview, taking place next term, as part of the Real Industry Job Interviews program. We wish them all the best with this! Steiner English classes also recently presented their Shakespeare plays to full theatre audiences!

The Year 8 Projects included a range of topics from learning how to crochet to juggling soccer balls (20 times!) to writing the opening of a novel!  These presentations encompassed a range of different skills across reading, writing, listening and speaking in addition to time management and organisation, and community interaction.

A highlight for Year 7 has been the Media: Stop Motion Animation work on rainbow serpent and creation stories. These are presently being shown on the screens within the school building.

The recognition could go on with STEM (Stile) incursions, interschool sport, careers excursions…and more! Thank you to all students and staff involved.

For the last five weeks, I have worked with students on another level as Acting Assistant Principal and I am proud of the approaches to learning, including our school values,  that I have observed on a day-to-day basis. Collingwood College is certainly an amazing place to teach and learn.

Thank you

Celebrating Teacher Aide Appreciation Week

A special morning tea was held this week to recognise the contributions that our teacher aides make to our primary and secondary classrooms.  We are very fortunate, and grateful, to have amazing support available to our students, teachers and school community.

Year 9 & 10 Boys Interschool Basketball

On Thursday, August 17th, seven Yr 9 & 10 boys travelled along with Tom to Coburg Stadium to compete in the Interschool Sport Competition.

The boys had the bye in the first round and played the next three rounds in consecutive games; winning them all.

Our first match against Australian International Academy was initially fairly close but as Collingwood settled in, we gained a substantial lead that was too tricky for our opponents to come back from. Jules was a very consistent scorer in this match and Rico proved a strong defender throughout. In our second game we played John Fawkner College's A-team. Our players really had the wind under their sails on this game and we had a convincing win. Ammon did very well at passing the ball around opponents, Sajaad dribbled with effortless style and Salhadin was great at moving into space. Our next game might have been the closest, versing JFC's B-team. Nerijus showed his skill in scoring a few goals and defending well. Oscar's continued high goal rate carried us to the win.

We then progressed to the final and though we fought valiantly, we lost to Coburg High School's B-team. The crew were pretty tuckered out by this point anyway.

Congratulations to the players who represented our school so well and had a great day of friendly competition.

Year 7 & 8 Girls Interschool Basketball Competition

On Wednesday, September 13th, a team of six Yr 7&8 girls travelled to Coburg Stadium to compete in the interschool basketball competition.

It was a beautiful, sunny day and we were all happy to have the opportunity to represent our school. The team comprised of: Lisa, Danah, Saedya, Tess, Telia and Esther. Tom and Emily accompanied them and supported them on the day.

We played three games and although we didn't win any of them, our skills progressed throughout the day and we had a few moments of success. Lisa was very strong in defence and used her height well to get the rebounds. Danah was really good at passing the ball around ensuring that everyone got a touch. Saedya was a confident dribbler and dodged a number of opponents. Tess showed strong awareness by running into space and calling for the ball. Telia was good at putting pressure on the other team and scored a great goal at one stage. Esther was our best runner and also scored a couple of goals over the course of the day.

Well done to all of the girls for their enthusiasm and giving the competition their best shot. It was an excellent way to end the school term.

Warm regards,

Tom O'Connell

Class Play Magic

For Class 8 Steiner students, term 3 began with the anticipation of our class play: William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Most students had experienced the magic of the class play before, because most of them have been enrolled in Collingwood College’s Steiner stream since primary school. Steiner students typically participate in a class play each year. Early primary plays begin with whole class songs, simple movement, and symbolic gestures. Later primary students assume individual roles, share their unique talents, and sometimes write their own class scripts.

The Class 8 child typically experiences the world through their feelings, and the emotions and humour of Shakespeare’s carefully crafted characters speak their language. Although not literally, at first. Understanding the lines is everyone’s first challenge. However, an introductory Shakespeare Main Lesson and weeks of tongue twisters and drama games help students develop a knowledge of their character. This play presented students with the exaggerated experiences of adolescence: intense crushes and heartache, anger and confusion, and the questionable involvement of some ill-mannered pranks. And after only four short weeks of rehearsal the class play was a success, all thanks to the students’ hard work.

The class play is but a memory, but its magic was felt throughout the whole of term 3. The social dynamic of the class felt more relaxed and cohesive. Despite the end of term stress, there exists a silent memory that gives us strength to continue to do our best. It is the knowledge that we are a part of something bigger, both onstage and off.
