Grade 5/6 Students

Celebrating our Fantastic Fives and Sensational Sixes!

Reading

There has been such an improvement in reading skills across the board this term. Students focused on accuracy and pace to assist with comprehension through paired reading. They read a variety of text types associated with the Natural Disasters Unit and also focused on developing more specific skills such as summarising, inferencing and note taking.

Looking ahead to next term, students will return to the land of Literacy Circles, where they complete and share a series of tasks each week relating to a shared novel for a small group of students. We will continue with paired reading tasks in Term 4 to maintain a focus on reading comprehension through speed and accuracy.

Writing

Students learned much about the style of writing required to create information and explanation reports. They were encouraged to explore, research and communicate their understanding of various topics. The results of their efforts resulted in improved outcomes of their research skills by gathering information from various sources, including books, online resources and interviews. They mastered the art of organising their writing by the presentation of a clear introduction, body and conclusion. They also used subheadings appropriately to provide structure and guidance to their readers.

In our final term, the main focus of writing will be on procedure and poetry, along with the many different pieces of writing that will need to be completed as we prepare for the leadership process for 2024 and graduation.

Maths

In Maths, 5/6 students have completed their unit on angles. They have become proficient in identifying and classifying angles. They honed their skills in using protractors to measure and draw angles accurately. Furthermore, the students discovered more about the relevance of angles in everyday life.

In Term 4, the students will commence a unit on Earn and Learn, a highly engaging program where students learn to manage their own basic finances. It makes maths meaningful and involves real life problems as students will be responsible for creating and running their own businesses. Earn and Learn also covers the Economic requirements of the Victorian Curriculum.

Respectful Relationships

Within Respectful Relationships, students continued discussions relating to help seeking and these important discussions will continue into next term.

Production

Well, The Great Monty Mystery has come to an end and what an incredible production it was. It is moments like these that help our students grow and thrive, not only as performers, but as individuals also. The production not only showcased our students’ artistic talents but also instilled in them valuable life skills such as teamwork, perseverance and confidence. The senior students took the stage by storm and delivered an outstanding performance that left the audience in awe. From the dazzling dance routines to the dynamic acting, every moment of The Great Monty Mystery was a testament to the incredible creativity and commitment of our students.
