CORAL REEF INSTALLATION

During semester 1 three classes of year 8 students completed a ceramic sculpture that has become a permanent display in the art and design atrium. During Semester 2 three more classes will complete the same project. It will be installed next to the current piece.

Coral reef ecosystems are alive with various colours and abundant marine life, but they exist in a delicate balance. Healthy corals obtain their colour from the algae which live symbiotically within them and provide the coral polyps with 90% of their energy requirements. When water temperatures rise only 1-2 degrees, the algae leave. This results in "Coral Bleaching" , leading to disease and death in only 4-6 weeks. The white coral encircling the healthy coral in this group sculptural installation represents the threat to healthy coral communities and aims to raise public awareness of this serious threat to tropical marine environments around the world.
