Year 8 Health

Creating Futures Together

This term, Year 8 students are involved in the OurFutures vaping education program - a huge thank you to Natalie Benfield for spearheading this program at WHSC! The program aligns with the Australian Curriculum and is being rolled out within Health classes across 4 lessons. It is run (ideally) in lessons one week apart so that students can incorporate the ideas into their lives; allowing for reflection and implementation.

This innovative vaping education program for high school students uses a social influence and harm-minimisation prevention approach across four lessons, each featuring:

•            a realistic and engaging illustrated cartoon story

•            activities, including class discussion prompts, role plays, quizzes, and worksheets.

•            summary sheets to reinforce key content

•            teacher resources to support delivery

Each lesson is divided into two sections:

  1. Online cartoon. In the first part of the lesson students spend approximately 20 minutes completing the internet-based section for that lesson. To do this each student needs to login to the website using their username and password. Each internet-based lesson contains an episode of a cartoon-based drama about the lives of young people. The drama about these young people gradually develops across the four to six lessons
  2. Activities. In the second part of the lesson teachers can assign one or more of the interactive activities for that lesson to students to complete within the OurFutures platform, which are available on the "Interactive activities" page once logged in. Additional PDF-based activities are available for each lesson, and are located on each lesson overview.

We encourage you to discuss this program with your child to encourage greater learning and understanding.
