Team Spirit is Our Competitive Edge
Term 4 is typically a quiet period for interschool sport as students begin preparing for their final assessments and examinations as the school year draws to a close. This year was no exception, however, the quiet period also provides a fantastic opportunity to reflect on the successes and learnings that the year’s sporting calendar provided. Academy enjoyed an undeniably successful year of sport in 2024, and student representatives of the various school’s certainly lived the Mercy Values of compassion, respect and courage in their competition performances. All students who represented the Academy in sport during 2024 should be proud of their involvement and we look forward to seeing what they can achieve in the future.
Division 2 CGSAV Softball – Thursday, 24 October – Stead Park Geelong
Academy was represented by a Junior, Intermediate and Senior team at Division 2 CGSAV Softball. Whilst competing, our students faced variable weather conditions, inclusive of wind, rain and sunshine. The rapidly changing conditions made it difficult for our students to adapt from game to game.

Greta Zabotto - was tireless in defence, running hard and attacking the ball both in the air and on the ground. She was also our most consistent hitter.
Clio Dinnen was irrepressible as pitcher. Many times she was able to pitch straight at the base plate with an uncanny ability to pitch dip balls and outswingers. She was also very encouraging to her team mates.
The heart and soul of the team proved to be Mila McNamara. Although under a lot of pressure in the outfield, she refused to give in, chasing constantly and putting her body on the line for the good of her team mates. At times, she misjudged the play but she was always willing to work hard to retrieve the ball, particularly at pivotal points in the play. A Geelong girl was heard to say of Mila: “That girl works really hard.” Fine praise from the opponent!
Mikayla Kaldas was also most determined as catcher. Many times, placing herself in precarious positions, she came through, saving the day for the Academy.
Katherine Fannelli was also an outstanding contributor. Having learnt her football at Fitzroy, she was lion-like in the field, while pitching and also coming in to bat.
On the scoreboard, the Academy was not successful, scoring one home run to the oppositions’ 35, but we never stopped trying and never stopped encouraging each other.
Seniors – Mr Aeneas Gallivan
Senior Results Table:
The Academy Senior team played with a great attitude and persistence during the entire day of competition. The team won their first match comfortably, before being challenged and beaten by a strong MSJ team in their second match. The Senior team played MSJ in the following Grand Final Match, and showed great resilience and an ability to stay calm under pressure. Following a strong start from the Academy, MSJ fought back and reclaimed the lead. Many other teams would have collapsed under the pressure but our Senior team remained composed, stuck to the game plan and won the match in a convincing fashion. The team should be very proud of their efforts.
