Chinatown excursion trip newsletter article

Last Friday, Reservoir High School’s Year 7E students enjoyed a fantastic excursion to Chinatown, where they had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich history and vibrant culture of the Chinese-Australian community. The excursion was guided by Ms. Sabrina Zhu (Teacher), Ms. Hau (Multicultural Education Advisor), and Andrew Coppin (Education Support), who helped students connect with the cultural significance of the places they visited.

The day began at the Chinese Museum, where students learned about the history of Chinese migration to Australia, from the Gold Rush era to the present day. They explored exhibits showcasing the struggles and triumphs of early Chinese immigrants and the lasting impact of Chinese communities on Australian society. Ms. Zhu led students through the museum, explaining key historical events, while Ms. Hau facilitated thoughtful discussions about multiculturalism and the importance of preserving cultural heritage.

After the museum visit, students made their way to The Crane restaurant for a delicious traditional Chinese lunch. At the restaurant, they tasted a variety of dishes, including dumplings, bao buns, and fried rice. The meal was not only a culinary delight but also an opportunity for students to learn about the role of food in Chinese culture and its significance in family and community celebrations. Andrew Coppin provided support throughout the meal, ensuring that all students were engaged and had the chance to ask questions.

The excursion provided a valuable learning experience, allowing students to connect with Chinese culture through both history and cuisine. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and enjoyment, made possible by the dedication of Ms. Zhu, Ms. Hau, and Andrew Coppin, who worked together to create an enriching and memorable experience for Year 7E.
