Octavia Community

Year 6

As we approach the end of another wonderful year, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the amazing achievements and growth of our Year 6 students. It has been a year full of hard work, memorable moments, and plenty of excitement as our students have prepared for the transition to secondary school. We are incredibly proud of all that the Octavia students have accomplished, and we thank the families and staff for their continued support!

Warm regards,

Shae, Ella, and Michele

LITERACY

In literacy, students learned how to participate in both formal and informal debates, plan and rehearse presentations, and deliver them effectively. They focused on the theme of sustainability as they selected and organised appropriate content and used various media to suit different audiences and purposes.

Additionally, students learned to identify the roles and responsibilities of electors and representatives in Australia's democracy, and explored how state/territory and federal laws are created and passed through parliament. This helped them understand the legislative process.

They wrote persuasive essays, a clear and thoughtful book review, and completed creative writing assignments related to their Year 7 transition.

MATHS

In maths, students conducted chance experiments and learned to describe probabilities using fractions, decimals, and percentages. This helped them understand how to represent and interpret the likelihood of different outcomes.

Students recognised that probabilities lie on numerical scales of 0–‍1 or 0%–100%, used estimation to assign probabilities that events occur in a given context, expressing common fractions, percentages and decimals.

INQUIRY

Students identified influences on consumer choices and explored strategies that could be used to help make informed financial choices. They evaluated requirements for currency and how it became a solution to the drawbacks of the barter system.

SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL LEARNING

We have explored and discussed behaviours that demonstrate sensitivity to individual, social, and cultural differences, and compared the various human rights priorities and concerns addressed in key United Nations declarations and conventions.
