Achilles Community Report

November 2024

As we are coming towards the final weeks of the term, the Grade one's have been busy working on lots of fun, interesting and challenging tasks to prepare them for the year ahead. We commend our Achilles student's for working so hard and maintaining their engagement in lessons, particularly as they have started counting down the days until the end of the year, and the most exciting and busiest period of all, Christmas.

Reading

In Reading we have been exploring exciting books like Stick and Stone, How to Make a Friend in 6 Easy Steps, Wombat Stew, and Three. These engaging stories have provided opportunities for students to practice important reading skills, such as sharing their opinions about the stories, understanding the characters, setting, and plot, and making inferences about what the characters might be feeling. It's been fantastic to see their enthusiasm for reading and their growth as thoughtful, curious readers!

Writing

In Writing students have practised different text types, writing both fiction and non-fiction texts. Students used the writing process to write their own narratives with a focus on creating descriptive characters and settings, as well a strong problem and solution. Students have also shown their skills in writing information texts. We have again experimented with text structure, using headings and subheading to organise our facts.

Maths

In Maths, the students of the Achilles community have been busy exploring exciting new concepts! We’ve been learning about capacity, discovering how much a container can hold by estimating and measuring using objects like unifix cubes. In addition, we’ve explored data collection, using tally charts and surveys to gather information. We then used this data to create graphs, helping us to visualise and interpret our findings in a fun and engaging way.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, the students have been having fun getting to know more about their and their peers' culture. Cultural Food Lunch Day saw the children discussing their cultural food and having a picnic with the rest of the Achilles Community children. They are still busy completing a presentation collage that celebrates the uniqueness of their culture and shows their special connection to Australia.

SEL

In SEL , students learned how to make new friends through play. They identified ways in which the rules of a game assist people in playing a game.  Students discussed how unfair play or breaking the rules of a game can lead to conflict and how boys and girls should be treated equally regardless of the game played. Achilles students explored the benefits of brushing our teeth. They learned when kids need to brush their teeth and why brushing is important.
