Level 2

Welcome to Term 4!

We are excited to welcome all our Level 2 families to the final term of the year! We can’t believe how quickly the year has flown by. It has been wonderful to see how much the students have grown in confidence, curiosity, and creativity. Term 4 promises to be filled with rich learning experiences, exciting projects, and special events to conclude the year on a high note.

Inquiry

This term’s inquiry focus is Connections, where students will explore the fascinating world of space and our solar system. Through hands-on activities, students will identify planets, their moons, and other key features of our solar system. They’ll also observe sky events, learn about the moon’s phases, and discover how First Nations stories are connected to the night sky.

Students will work collaboratively to create a model solar system, with each group focusing on one planet and its moons using materials such as paper mâché, paint, cardboard, and wire. This project will allow students to combine creativity, science, and teamwork while developing their research and presentation skills in Digital Technologies.

Literacy

In Reading, we are focusing on looking at texts from different perspectives and making predictions. Students will explore a range of Jeannie Baker’s beautiful picture books, before diving into The Hidden Forest later in the unit. Through activities like “See–Think–Wonder” and guided discussions, students will make connections, explore key ideas, and learn to adjust their predictions as they read.

In Writing, we are revising persuasive and narrative texts. Students have begun the term with a focus on persuasive writing, creating a planet brochure to convince readers why their chosen planet is the best. They will research facts, take notes, and use persuasive techniques and emotive language to inform and persuade. Later in the term, students will apply their creativity to write space-themed narratives, using descriptive language and strong vocabulary.

Our Spelling program continues with Jolly Phonics, where we will explore new sound patterns and spelling rules to strengthen reading and writing fluency.

Numeracy

In Mathematics, we are beginning the term by revising key concepts in number and shape/space.

In Number, students recognise, represent, and order numbers to 1000 using materials, numerals, and number lines. They are also developing a deeper understanding of place value by partitioning and regrouping 2-digit and 3-digit numbers and exploring the important role of zero.

In Shape and Space, students are learning to identify, sort, and compare 2D shapes based on their features, such as curved or straight sides. They will then move on to classifying shapes using formal mathematical language, such as parallel, opposite, and curved.

These foundational concepts will support our continued learning in number and measurement later in the term.
