PRAYER

October is dedicated to the Rosary, a prayer honouring Our Lady and seeking her intercession to God on our behalf. This devotion expresses gratitude for the protection Mary offers the church and to all who call upon her. The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was celebrated last week on October 7th.

The Rosary is a prayer deeply rooted in scriptures. For example, the Our Father is the prayer that Jesus taught us and can be found in Matthew 6:9–13 and Luke 11:2–4. The Hail Mary is taken directly from the Bible, using the words the Angel Gabriel to said to Mary, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee" (Luke 1:28), forming the first part, and Elizabeth's greeting to Mary, "Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb" (Luke 1:42), forming the second part of the prayer. The concluding petition, "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death," was added by the Church centuries later.

October is a fantastic opportunity for families to spend some time in prayer saying the Rosary together. If this seems too big a task perhaps you could tackle a Decade a Day which is simply Our father, 10 Hail Mary’s and is finished it off with Glory Be!
