Strengthening Memory and Anxiety Reduction Trial (SMART)

Gallery Image

We are currently offering six free treatment sessions for children with anxiety disorders at Macquarie University as part of a clinical trial funded by the Medical Research Future Fund – the Strengthening Memory and Anxiety Reduction Trial (SMART).

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health issues affecting children. Although we have good treatments, many children continue to struggle – even after receiving the best care currently available. One reason may be that children, like adults, often forget important parts of what they learn in therapy. There's promising new research in adults showing that brief memory training, completed after sessions, can boost how well treatment works. We're now trialling two types of memory training in children to see which works best alongside gold-standard anxiety treatment (exposure-focused cognitive behavioural therapy).
