Year Two Team News

with Steph, Joel and Rochelle

Hello Year Two families,

Welcome back to what is going to be a very exciting Term Four!

Over the last two weeks, we have explored measurement in Maths. This has led students to measure the length of a variety of objects around the classroom using informal units, such as blocks, packs of cards, glue sticks, etc. We have also begun a unit on mass and the students are enjoying measuring the mass of everyday objects using balance scales.

This term, our Inquiry Unit is ‘What’s In Our Garden and Why Does It Matter?’  The students have begun exploring the gardens around the schoolgrounds and creating some fantastic drawings. We look forward to exploring the students’ wonderings and learning more about our environments and the creatures around us.

Over the coming weeks, we will begin completing some assessment tasks for our end of year reports. We are looking forward to celebrating the growth the students have made in all learning areas.

Important news:

  • Year 2 Sleepover – Thursday 6th November

Early next week, our Year 2 Sleepover notes will be sent home with the students. To assist us with preparation for the Sleepover, please return your child’s food preference form and medical forms by 27th October. If you have any questions about the information that has been sent home, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

  • Helpers for the Grade 2 Sleepover

The Grade Two team is currently compiling a list of parents who would like to volunteer for the Year 2 Sleepover on Thursday 6th - Friday 7th November. We have different shifts that parents can help out with. We currently have one parent from 2J, 2K and 2W on hand for the overnight shift. A big shout-out to the parent helpers who have already volunteered to assist us overnight – between Thursday 5pm - Friday 7am (approx.)

We are currently looking for helpers during the dinner and breakfast service. It is also good to have back up helpers who may be able to help out if other parents are unable to attend at the last minute.

If are available and would like to assist as a parent helper during the Dinner Service on Thursday 6th November between 5pm - 9pm (approx.) helping students to settle in and help with dinner service/clean up/dishes etc. please contact your child’s teacher. Alternatively, if you are able to assist with breakfast on the Friday morning (approx. 6.30am - 9am (helping with the pack up and breakfast service/clean up/dishes/morning activities) please let us know.

As the event is running from a Thursday night into the Friday morning, we understand that there are many work and family commitments. However, if this is something that you are interested in helping out with or have any questions, please contact us.

*Note: a current Working with Children Check needs to be submitted to the school office and the Annual Volunteer Registration on Compass needs to have been completed annually in order to assist.

  • Parent helpers for swimming: Thank you to the parents who have already volunteered to assist with our school swimming program. If you are able to help on any of the days, please add your name to the swimming rosters placed outside each of the classrooms or contact your child’s teacher. Ideally, we would like two parent helpers each Wednesday, if possible, and there are still quite a few spots available.

  • Broad-brimmed hats: Hats are required to be worn in Term 4. Please remind your child to pack their hat each day.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 3 and 4 of Term 4

Literacy: In Reading, we will be continuing to learn facts from non-fiction texts.

Numeracy:  We will continue to work on measurement by focusing on mass and capacity.

Inquiry: We will continue to learn about insects that can be found in the gardens around us using non-fiction texts.

Willy Kids: Through the pillar of responsibility, we will be learning about accountability and ways that we can be accountable at school.

Until next time,

The Grade Two Team - Steph Keswick (2K), Joel Kitchen (2J) & Rochelle White (2W)
