Digital Learning

Resources to support families and students to be safe and responsible digital citizens

Hello everyone,

Welcome back for Term 4!

Term 4 will see our students engage with their learning through a variety of different online apps and digital platforms. Our Grade 5/6 lunchtime 3D Printing Club are close to having their first go at 3D printing. Students have been busy learning and developing their skills using the online platform Makers Empire. Students have worked through guided lessons designing jewellery.  We look forward to sharing with you some of the designs in future newsletters.

Our Grade 3/4s will be creating stop motion movies later in the year using their iPads to capture many photos retelling a twisted fairytale.

This week, our Grade 3/4 students participated in their next eSafety lesson. The lesson focused on online behaviours and personal information. The students watched a short animated video following two students who help identify another student through their online activity. The students’ online activity leads to an unwanted visitor highlighting the dangers of friending unknown profiles online.

At the conclusion of the video, students collectively answered the following questions-

How could this situation have been avoided?

What are some rules for Sarah to stay safe online?Do you have rules at home about using the internet? If so, what are they?

Some rules students shared were –

  • Asking permission to buy/download an app
  • Setting up their iPad so a parent had to authorise an app purchase
  • Not accessing digital devices in bedrooms
  • Time restrictions on digital devices
  • No online chat or chat groups
  • Parents overseeing all group messages

To support the lesson, students had the task of creating an online (paper version) profile. Students had to think about what information they would share on an online profile. They then enjoyed trying to guess whose profile belonged to who.

We discussed what should and shouldn’t go into an online profile. See examples below of what was discussed.

Safe profiles could include:

Safe profiles should not include:

  • First name, nickname or pseudonym
  • Hobbies, interests with no specific details such as club name
  • Only photos where specific details can’t be identified such as school or sports uniform, location, time
  • Likes and dislikes such as movies or food
  • Full name
  • Full name of friends or family
  • Birth date
  • Name of school or clubs/teams
  • Photos that can easily identify you e.g. school uniform
  • Home address, phone number

The lesson concluded with the following messaging taken from the animated video.

BEING SAFE ONLINE:

1. Be careful – not everything people say online will be the truth.

2. Check first – don’t give out any personal details unless you check.

3. Don’t stay – leave a site or game if someone is rude or offensive or makes you feel unsafe.

4. Help – offer to help someone that’s being cyberbullied.

5. Report – if someone is being mean on the internet or mobile phone.

6. Tell – If you feel something is wrong when you are online.

7. Don’t meet – never meet anyone in person you haven’t met before.

Finally, please have a read of the newsletter sent out from the Department of Education, helping families support students in the online world.

Warm regards,

Steven Puhar

WPS Digital Online Learning Statement

Digital Statement

Williamstown Primary School acknowledges the recent Human Rights Watch report on Edutech in privacy violations and findings.

Williamstown Primary works closely with the DET’s Digital Learning and privacy teams to ensure that all DET guidelines regarding the implementation of digital devices are followed.

Attached is the school’s digital statement outlining the online platforms and their privacy policies that the school uses on a day-to-day basis.

As part of the school’s ongoing student education, the school will further enhance key understandings around user privacy, as well as the tools available on selected devices.

This will be embedded within the current school’s eSafety program that currently sees students undertake numerous digital workshops run by both school leadership, classroom teachers and external providers such as the Alannah and Madeline Foundation’s eSmart organisation.

Parents are advised of a key iPad feature to turn tracking off. This feature will be explicitly demonstrated to students within the school-based workshops.

Go to Settings > Privacy > Tracking.

The list shows the apps that requested permission to track you. You can turn permission on or off for any app on the list.

To stop all apps from asking permission to track you, turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track (at the top of the screen).

JB HiFi Digital Purchase Portal 2025/2026

The JB HiFi purchase portal is again available for Willy PS families. The schools recommended minimum specification device is the iPad Gen 9, but the portal does also offer a range of iPad models and accessories. Although students have access to bluetooth keyboards we also recommend the Smart Keyboard or a 3rd party keyboard incorporated within the cover. This accessory will add value to the users experience.

Please also note the change in School Code.

Although the portal is set up through JB HI-FI on behalf of the school, we encourage families to explore all purchase options.

Further GoogleSuite for Education Information

Please find attached documents released by DET.

The first document gives a deeper understanding of the DET licences G Suite for Education, how it is set up and how it differs from the public Google platform.

The second document provides families with supporting resources on how to protect individuals privacy online.
