Principal's Message

Brock Wilson

It has been another busy fortnight here at Roxburgh Homestead Primary School!

Swimming Program:

I know many of our students are excited for the return of our swimming program next week. Starting with our 5/6 students on Wednesday, our Grade 3/4  students on Thursday and then our F-2 students later in the term. Swimming is such an important skill to learn for overall wellbeing and safety, and it is fantastic that our students get to experience these structured lessons across the school.

Soccer Tournament:

Speaking of keeping fit and being active, Roxburgh Homestead Primary School is sending two teams of soccer players down to compete in a soccer tournament at Roxburgh Park Primary School next week. The selected students are largely made up of children who were successful in our student-ran tournament in Term 3. Join me in wishing them the best of luck – I am sure they will represent our school with pride.

School Canteen and Success Day:

Led by our parent volunteers, the return of the canteen continues to be a big success. As always, we will continue to send out communications via Compass regarding items that will be available for purchase and when the canteen will be open. All funds being raised through the canteen this term are being put towards our end of year Success Day Event.

Speaking of Success Day, there is a lot of work happening behind the scenes to bring this community event back to life. Watch this space in the coming weeks as we will have further information to announce about this exciting day.

Thank you to all the staff and parents who have been involved in either supporting the fundraising through the canteen or planning for the big event. I know how excited so many in our community are to see this brought back to life and I am proud to see different members of our community work together to do something special for the children.

Department of Education – Changes to Device Use in Schools

From 2027, the Victorian Government is introducing changes to the use of digital devices for students from Prep/ Foundation to Grade 6.

Under the new guidelines, schools:

• will no longer invite families to purchase or bring their own digital devices to use at school for Prep/Foundation to Grade 6

• will follow new recommended digital device times, including minimal device time for Prep/Foundation to Grade 2; and a maximum of 90 minutes per day for grades 3 to 6. These changes are intended to support families by reducing cost-of-living pressures. They will also support students by reducing screen-time which can reduce the risk of eye strain, sedentary behaviour, and reduced peer interaction. These reforms complement Victoria’s nation-leading mobile phone restrictions, ensuring an integrated approach to addressing digital distraction and the inappropriate use of technology.

At Roxburgh Homestead Primary School, we already provide school-owned digital devices for student learning, so there is no impact on our school’s BYOD programs. As a school, we will be ensuring our classes are compliant with these new standards and ensuring that there is a balance between device use and other forms of learning.  Please note that students with disability who use a digital device as a reasonable adjustment are exempt from these changes.  You can read more about the changes on the department’s website: Digital Learning: Policy.

SunSmart Term – Hats

We also wrote to all families earlier this term with a reminder that all students in all government schools are required to wear a hat when playing outside at lunch time and recess. This is now being strictly enforced, with students required to stay in designated shaded areas if they do not have their hats. We are still seeing some students who have not yet obtained a hat. Families are encouraged to reach out to the school office for support with hats.

2026 Enrolments

Finally, another reminder to any families that have students joining us at Roxburgh Homestead Primary School next year to please see our office staff as soon as possible to organise your enrolment. This will help us prepare and best support your child for this big transition. We are seeing a lot of interest in our school for next year, which is fantastic.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Kind Regards,

Brock Wilson
