Soft Start

This is why we have the 8.50am-9.00am soft start at PVNPS. It is highly important that students arrive at this time to have the ability to experience the benefits of this calm time to to be social, get organised and to settle into the day effectively.

Students who are coming in late tend to rush and be somewhat anxious and disorganised for the morning.

In the classroom, a soft start is a period at the beginning of the day or class that allows students to transition into learning through calm, low-stress, self-directed activities rather than immediate academic tasks. The goal is to foster a positive classroom atmosphere, reduce anxiety, build community, and prepare students' bodies and minds for the day ahead by providing a sense of safety and predictability.

Key Aspects of a Soft Start

  • Gentle Transition:
  • Student Choice:
  • Low-Stakes Activities:
  • Community Building:

It provides a smooth shift from home to school or from one subject to another, helping students feel secure and grounded.

Students typically choose from a small selection of self-directed activities, empowering them and activating their curiosity and sense of self-direction.

These are calming activities that do not involve direct teaching or pressure to perform academically.

Soft starts offer opportunities for students to interact with peers, strengthening their sense of community.
