Year Three
Spotlight on Learning
Ephesus Community
Dear Families,
This week, we have made our colourful tie-dye socks for our Socktober fundraiser. This year, Socktober will support communities in need, putting into action the Catholic Social Teaching principles of helping others and promoting social justice, bringing hope and light to those facing challenges. In Maths, students have learned about the measurement concept of mass, exploring how to measure and compare different objects. In English, we have been learning about the origins of the English language, including how Latin bases like ‘port’ help us understand and spell new words. We also explored Diwali, with many students sharing their experiences of this celebration, reflecting on themes of light, hope, and new beginnings. Our Socktober fundraiser sales will commence from Monday 27th to Friday 31st October, with a variety of tie-dyed socks available for purchase: 1 pair for $3 or 2 pairs for $5.

This Week's Learning
Religious Education
This week in Religious Education students have been:
Integrated Learning
This week in Integrated Studies, students have been learning why water is important for health and how Aboriginal peoples cared for rivers, lakes, and waterholes. They also connected these past practices to how we look after water in our community today, recognising the importance of caring for this vital resource.
English
In English this week, Year 3 students have been learning to spell and read words that have a suffix added to a base word ending in ‘y’. For example, carry becomes carrier, and happy becomes happiness. We have also been preparing to read The One and Only Ivan by making predictions and analysing characters as we begin to explore the story. In Writing, students have been learning about the features of persuasive texts, such as letters to the editor, and using evidence from the text to support their ideas in full sentences.
Mathematics
This week in Maths, Year 3 students have been learning to estimate, measure, and compare the mass of everyday objects using grams and kilograms. They estimated the mass of different items before weighing them, used scales to measure accurately, and recorded their estimates, actual measurements, and differences in a table. Students enjoyed comparing the mass of various objects to see which were heavier or lighter and discussing why these differences occurred.
Social & Emotional Learning / RRRR
This week in SEL, Year 3 students have been learning that everyone experiences fears in different ways and has their own ways of coping. They have identified their own fears and responses, shared and discussed different coping strategies, and learned to recognise and respect that others may cope in different ways.
