Year Five

Spotlight on Learning

Bethany Community

Dear Bethany Families,

What a wonderful week the Year 5's have had. The students thoroughly enjoyed the incursion called The Body Investigators in which they dressed up and participated in drama role playing about the body systems and how they keep us healthy.

Next Week

Religious Education:  Next week, students will be blessed with a visit from Pastor Prince, who works with 'Christ Mission India'. He will speak to the students about his work supporting vulnerable and marginalised communities in India. Students will learn about the difference being made for those less fortunate, which will inspire their own fundraising efforts to support this important work — a wonderful example of Catholic Social Teaching in action.

English: The students continue to enjoy our class novel, The Last Bear by Hannah Gold. They are now planning and writing their own persuasive letters focused on the conservation of polar bears. Each day, students explore new vocabulary and deepen their comprehension through class discussions. Our fluency reading texts are all based on Christ Mission India, which is a wonderful way to bring reading and Religious Education together.

Mathematics :

The students have now completed their unit on fractions, decimals, and percentages, and are moving on to operations. Our focus next week will be on rounding numbers to the nearest power of ten, determining the effect of rounding up or down in subtraction calculations, and applying rounding and estimation strategies to solve real-world problems. Students will also explore how rounding can affect results in different contexts. Lots of rounding!

Integrated Studies:

Next week, students will be learning about how to find and use reliable health information. They will explore different sources and types of health information, such as websites, advertisements, and community organisations. Students will also learn how to evaluate the quality and trustworthiness of the information they find. Finally, they will practise applying this knowledge to make informed and healthy choices for themselves and others.

Social & Emotional Learning:

Next week, students will explore data showing how common different forms of gender-based violence are in our country. Through guided discussions, they will learn to interpret this information sensitively and reflect on the importance of respect, equality, and standing up for others. The focus is on helping students recognise safe and respectful behaviours and understand how everyone can contribute to a kinder, safer community.

Auslan:

Next week, students will begin some end of year assessments and revisions of previously learned signs. Ask your child which is their favourite sign and see if they can sign it for you and demonstrate how to sign.

Reminders

HATS - During term 4, school hats are mandatory.

As students’ bodies and minds continue to develop, it’s important they start the day well-nourished. We kindly ask families to ensure that students come to school having eaten a healthy breakfast. A nutritious start to the day helps students maintain focus, energy, and a positive attitude throughout the morning, particularly during the first two hours of learning when concentration is vital. Thank you for your support in helping our students be ready to learn and do their best each day.

Reminder for students to bring in forks or spoons with their lunch.
