Hello Vermont families and welcome to the Numeracy section of the Nurlendi News! Here is where we will share any exciting resources, games or ideas that you may find interesting and enjoy using at home with your children.

 

Proximity

Proximity is a strategy game where you place your tiles on the game board to capture your enemies’ tiles, being careful that you don’t leave your tiles vulnerable to an attack! It’s an addictive game which promotes mental calculation, addition and reasoning.

 

Maths in Picture Story Books

A fantastic way for families to engage in Mathematics is by incorporating picture story books. Many books, aside from being beautifully written and illustrated, provide a fun and platform for great mathematical discussions. Here are a few examples.

 

The Very Hungry Caterpillar (Eric Carle). 

A caterpillar eats 1 piece of fruit on Monday, 2 on Tuesday and so on until it transforms into a colourful butterfly.

Maths concepts include:

  • Number sense.
  • Days of the week
  • Sequencing
  • Number recognition

 

A Place for Zero (Angeline LoPresti). 

The character ‘Zero’ struggles to find his place, until he realises that he can help all the other digits become larger numbers.

Maths concepts include:

  • Place value.
  • Importance of zero as a digit
  • Addition
  • Recognition of large numbers.

 

Uno’s Garden (Graeme Base)

Uno moves into the forest, but as more people arrive, the animals start to dwindle.

Maths concepts include:

  • Counting backwards from 10.
  • Number sequences
  • Square numbers
  • Addition & Subtraction

 

One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab (April Pulley Sayre & Jeff Sayre). 

Illustrates all the ways numbers can be made using different animals and their legs.

Maths concepts include:

  • Skip counting.
  • Multiplication as repeated addition
  • Number sentences
