National Simulataneous Storytime

Last week, on Monday, 27 May, all classes that came to the library celebrated National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS).

The concept of NSS is that each year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes and other places around the country. This year the same book was shared with over 2.8 million children around Australia.  The aim of NSS is to bring everyone together by sharing the value, fun and love of reading.

The book shared this year was called ‘Bowerbird Blues written and illustrated by Aura Parker.  The story stars a beautiful bowerbird on the search for blue! It’s a moving story of longing and connection, that unfolds as the bowerbird’s search sends him soaring across the sea, sky, and the city of Sydney.  He swoops and snatches vibrant treasures for his collection, and soon his bower, a mix of natural and unnatural objects – attracts something greater and more fulfilling than he could have ever imagined.

Our students engaged with the story and there were many discussions about what bowerbirds collect and what we need to be doing to ensure the safety and sustainability of the natural environment for our wildlife, fauna, and flora.
